Through sheer hard work and dedication an enlightened mortal can learn to emulate the excellence of a natural essence user, albeit in a weaker and more limited format. A skilled swordsman could learn to use his blade as an extension of his very soul for example...
The enlightened mortal may purchase a number of additional dice equal to her relevant specialties in that ability.

Should the character Exalt or receive the necessary endowment to become God Blooded then this charm is replaced with the appropriate First Excellency that *doesn't* count towards the number of starting charms.

Why?

Mortal essence use is limited to two areas, martial arts and occult which can impose an unnecessary limitation on any long term "heroic mortals to exalted" game. Ordinarily the swordsman in the above example would be best advised to learn a martial art style which uses swords as a form weapon.

The capacity of Essence Manipulation should be limited enough to prevent the dreaded "mortal creep" I for one would be much more concerned about those who've taken the trouble to learn sorcery or an entire Terrestrial style.
