 Description
Rae is a well built, sinuous young man; he is cool, calculating and highly intelligent, though not particularly charismatic. He was earmarked by his family for a leadership role within one of House Cathaks’ legions; however by the time he was old enough to attend secondary school he still had not exalted. Everyone assumed that he had been overlooked by the Dragons, perhaps because he had at an early age offered devoted service to Mela, the Dragon of Air, as opposed to fiery Hesieh.
 History
Rae spent most of his early life being cared for by the family servants, only rarely being treated to the presence of his parents, and never both at the same time. He was tutored alongside his much older cousin Teptes, in the arts, sciences, languages and as he grew older in warfare. By the age of seven Rae was a match for Teptes in several areas of study. The only other family member that Rae spent any time with was his uncle Teples, who initially only came to visit his own son Teptes. Uncle Teples became an important role-model for Rae through out his early life.
At the age of ten uncle Teples took Rae and Teptes to the southern satrapy of An-Teng during the school holidays, Teples had been tasked with garrisoning the area against marauding slaves that had been attacking caravans and travellers. Teples and his Dragon quickly brought an end to the slave revolt, the men were all rounded up and gelded, the women had their tongues cut out before being given to the soldiers to take their fill. Rae and Teptes were given the children of the slaves, and told to help them on their way into their next incarnations. On his return to the Realm, Rae took to his studies with renewed intent, he stopped worrying about exaltation and determined to be the best that he could possibly be.
Rae’s branch of the family was started by Cathak Tzisimon, a notorious merchant prince and explorer who founded many of the trade routes and satrapies that built the family fortune. He has been missing for over 20 years, presumed dead when fragments of the ship he was sailing on washed up on the beach. Rae’s grandmother Cathak Anarae, is a noted historian who heads up the Shoganate department at the Imperial library. His mother is Cathak Syrnis, a famed military strategist who wrote several texts to aid students in interpreting ‘The Thousand actions of the upright soldier’. She is currently a tutor at the Academy of Bells.
Rae’s father is a roving ambassador called Togrun. He visits the many satrapies of House Cathak to determine the correct taxes that they should be paying. Syrnis and Togrun have a wedding of convenience, it was a political alliance arranged by their parents, there is no love between the two and both keep lovers. Rae’s uncle Teples holds the rank of General, and commands House Cathak’s first Legion, he is married to Cynis Seyla, who is responsible for organising all social events hosted by the family. Rae has an elder brother – Teyja – who died in a training accident at the Academy of Bells. It was rumoured that he was having a relationship with a local patricians daughter, which resulted in a successful pregnancy but if this is true, it has been well hidden. Rae has another brother called Arja who is serving as a Scale Commander in the 2nd Cathak Legion along with his cousin’s Teptes, Seyla and Teja. He has a sister called Torva, who is serving as a Scale Commander in the 3rd Imperial Legion, and Rae’s eldest sister Syrnae is currently adventuring somewhere within the Scavenger lands.
