Emaldrine: the Lost Maiden, Demon of the Second Circle
Reflective Soul of That Which Calls to the Shadows
Description: Emaldrine understands the dark emotions of the soul more than any other, but most especially the feelings of mourning, creeping depression, lost convictions and shattered hope. In the nights of the First Age, she was occasionally called into Creation when a man of exceptional virtue and morality had lost everything and was drowning in the darkness of his own defiled soul. Drawn to such a bright star that had fallen so fully into the shadow, her presence in a balm to such horrible afflictions of the soul, and after a time the afflicted individual begins to take pleasure in the things that once repulsed him. When the Lost Maiden was forced from Creation, or choose to leave of her own decision, most such souls would leave with her to flee the Creation that they now found a dim parody of the home they felt was truly theirs. Of those that remained, many legends and half-remembered stories remain, for the touch of Emaldrine does not fade with her absence.
In eons past, Emaldrine was born whole out of a bulbous postule to the side of Erembour. Daughter looked to mother, and asked, "Who am I?" Mother smiled to daughter, and answered, "You, my Maiden Child, are the shadow of the darkness of the soul. I will call you Emaldrine."
Unlike her mother, Emaldrine can remain active even in the light of the day -- though the rays of the Unconquered Sun loose some of their vibrancy around her form, and she seldom feels comfortable under the gaze of her nemesis. She prefers the dark places away from the light of the sun, such as windowless rooms in the back of large manors or dark caverns where the light has never touched. In the First Age, those souls suffering from Melancholy and Depression were often dragged outside into the light quite often, and those that lingered overlong in their darkened rooms were said to be asking for the touch of the Lost Maiden.
