DariusSolluman/UnusalUnits
Unusual Units Barbarians, the Undead, and other units which screw with these guidelines.
Of course, the preceeding rules assume fairly mundane situations and types of soldiers. They have no bearing on two relatively common but high divergent situations.
Barbarians
A barbarian hoarde at the back of a Lunar, rampagaging through civilized land is hardly an uncommon sight, sadly. Such forces are almost always consist of conscripts, and training is lost on them- a Lunar can quickly raise a hoarde, but such armies are something of a dead end, and can be easily beaten back by a similiarly sized, or even smaller, force of disciplined troops.
Barbarian hoardes do not fight for pay, and virtually maintain themselves- if they are capable of doing so. Warriors are expected to live off of the land and on the food and water they carry, but it's up to the Commander to help keep everyone at fighting trim. Thus, the Commander must make a monthly Intelligence+Survival check, difficulty equal to the Base Resource Cost of the Army (they are considered to be fighting without pay). Failure inflicts a HL of damage- from weaklings falling away rather than deserters.
The Undead
A Deathknight riding head at a collumn of firehoofed nightmare cavalry, flanked by legions of skeletons and zombies, is a terrible sight. The dead at war are relentless, uncaring of their own losses. But they are also mostly mindless- the average infantryman may seize a critical initative that would be utterly lost on the walking dead.
Other soldiers from the Underworld lack their fellows unintelligence- but see little worth in mortal monies. Only the substances of the Shadowed Realm have any real meaning for them.
An army of unintelligent undead suffers a -2 penelty to it's Communication, and a -1 to it's Training, Equipment and Spirit. However, they add half again (round down) their health levels of each row. So, a Fang of Skeletons still only has -0/-1/-2DariusSolluman/Broken, a Scale has -0/-1 x3/-2 x4/-4DariusSolluman/Broken, a Talon has -0 x3/-1 x4/-2 x6/-4/-6DariusSolluman/Broken, and so on. They also require no maintainance, and have a base Resource cost of 0, regardless of size. Nor do they ever require pay.
Unintelligent undead can not be recruited naturally- they must be constructed with Necromantic magics, as presented in Exalted: The Abyssals. Divide a unit's given size by the number of health levels- each health level is represented by that many unintelligent undead. Undead armies require no additional training once built, nor can they benefit from such.
An army of intelligent undead are recruited and trained much as their living brethern, albiet only in the Underworld. They gain all the benefits of natural Essence weilders, and may be trained up to a +6 total bonus. However, they have different requirements than the living. They have no Base Resources Cost, but almost all charge some amount for their services, and their pay is almost always in the form of Grave Goods to form the backbone of the Underworld economy.
