Sijan
Sijan is unique among the cities of Creation, a city of death encased in the world of the living. Unlike Onyx, it is not located in a Shadowland. Instead, the city bridges the gap between the living Creation and the Underworld through it's service and reverance toward the Dead. Among the living, few know more of the Arts of Dying and Death than the Funeral Order of Righteous Morticians and Embalmers ('the Funeary Order' for short) that dominates the City of Tombs. The buisness of the city is the process of dying, the transferance of a man from a physical life in Creation to whatever lays in store for the soul of that person after death. People come from across the East, and all over Creation, to die. Indeed, in the East the City of Sijan is integral to the process of dying. The respect of the Sijanese for the Dead is renowned all over Creation.
Yet, on the other side of Life and Death, the city is quite different.
Once a funeral has ceased, and a soul has passed into the Underworld with his burial goods and offerings at hand, that soul finds himself in the Mourning Fields or one of the cities many Crypts or Mausoleums. Quickly, he gets bored and attempts to leave his place of final rest. Yet, before he can even enter the City of the Dead, he must pay the proper tax out of his burial goods. Upon the streets of the City, the newly emergant soul is approached by guides -- very expensive guides. Travel taxes have to be paid, and numerous other fees as well. Some exit the city penniless and destitute, others loose all and enter the masses of Lemures that exist at the bottom of Sijanese society. Most, however, take up existance in the City of Dead itself -- the Funeary Order is quick to offer jobs and tasks to 'poor' ghosts in need, and Sijan is fairly kind to its adopted residents.
