History:
The Burning Legion began its career as a reserve unit serving in the Scavenger Lands as the 51st Legion. The 51st, under General Cathak Ragnus, was assisting the Prefect of Paragon against rival city Gem raiding and taking control of several key gem and firedust mines. While touring Hollow Mountain firedust mine, the staff of Ragnus triggered a booby trap set by the Despot of Gem. The resulting collapse and a well-timed rally attack by the Despot’s forces resulted in a bloody day that left most of the legion dead, including Ragnus.

Although the Legion won the day, the highest remaining officer was a niece of the general, Colonel Cathak Ajilon. A young fire aspect hungry for her own command, she mustered the survivors into just a Wing and a Talon and set about fortifying and rebuilding the mine. Runners were dispatched to the nearest outpost requesting more troops and further orders.

To the chagrin of the survivors, and most especially their new commander, the Deliberative ordered the disbanding of the 51st Legion effective immediately. Feeling betrayed by her own people, Ajilon continued to train and recruit locals to again strengthen the force, and put the future of the unit to the men.

In a unanimous decision, the 51st Legion swore a new oath of loyalty to their Colonel and set upon their own future. They served two more years with the Prefect, helping him take several mines, and fortifying the mine they fought so hard to keep. Ajilon set up a series of caravans selling firedust to her family, which she sold at slightly marked up prices, and used the profit to rearm her Legion. Although not thrilled with their prodigal daughter, House Cathak tolerated the arrangement out of sheer greed for exclusive shipments of the precious combustible.

Unable to fully replace depleted manpower, Ajilon settled for arming her troops with top of the line weapons, and ensuring special training in the use of firedust rifles and cannons. Three years after its informal creation, the newly named Burning Legion finally decided it was time to venture closer to home. Colonel Cathak Ajilon lead the Legion to Nexus and purchased a barracks for the company, and immediately began fortifying the position, as well as contracting for a new commission.

Behind her she left an outpost of 45 men holding the Hollow Mountain Fortress she painfully constructed, and a well-established caravan route that ensures both her, and House Cathak a steady supply of the precious firedust. Much of the profits of these activities go toward a continual supply of slave labor and recruiting, as well as keeping the troops well armed and supplied with firedust.

Persons of Note:

Major Ledaal Orion – Commander of the Heavy Infantry Talon, talented, but loyal officer who followed Ajilon out of personal interest, and who still hopes to romance her. Arakasi and he do not get along particularly well, they find one another insufferable. He comes from a long line of career soldiers, and has refused to contact his family regarding his decommission and desertion.

Captain Cathak Marum – Hollow Mountain Garrison command, cousin and friend of Ajilon. Commands the veterans who hold the heavily fortified Firedust mine. Also handles the shipping of Firedust to the realm, and arrangements with the Guild for new slaves to work the mines. A kind, fair man, who works the soldiers and slaves alike hard, but fair. He is a stickler for discipline and a very old fashion officer, quick to quote The Thousand Correct Actions of the Upright Solider as justification for his actions.

Captain Relg – Aid de Camp, patrician from Imperial City. Handles intelligence gathering and a talented sneak and assassin as well as able administrator. Favors throwing knives and small-concealed weapons. He is a short dark compact man, easily overlooked among the crowd, or especially among a group of soldiers.

Captain Sujerron ibn’Alar – Recruited captain from a Paragon outpost disenchanted with the Prefect. A very talented strategist and horse warrior. Leads the small compliment of outriders and cavalry attached to the Legion, making the skirmishers much more effective than in the hands of a less talented commander. Known for his taciturn quiet economy with which he moves and speaks.

Sergeant Locor – Supply Sergeant, recruited from Yane years ago, many black market contacts and terrible dice cheater. One of the more infamous members of the Legion. He has been with the unit for 40 years, and is rumored to have a hint of supernatural heritage for the spryness he still exhibits. Locor still makes frequent comments about leaving the Legion and retiring, claiming he just has to hide a little bit longer, but after so many years of such comments, most in the Legion completely ignore him these days.

Mendallo – Personal servant and bodyguard captain of the Fang that protects and aids Arakasi. A criminal from the far North who joined the Legion for his own reasons which he will never talk about. A large silent man nearly 7 feet tall and massively muscled; he intimidates most around him a great deal. Reports to Ajilon as often as Arakasi. Wields more authority than a typical Sergeant, many of the Lieutenants deferring to him. Fiercely loyal to both Ajilon and Arakasi.

Cadia – Personal servant and bodyguard to Ajilon, longtime servant and friend, and also a carefully and secretly trained poisoner. Holds no official position in the company, but always knows what is going on. Cadia is a pretty woman of 30 years known for sleeping with most eligible officers in the Legion and a host of others. She was a slave freed by Ajilon’s mother but sworn to bodyguard and watches the child forever in exchange for her freedom.
