History

Jan Vutch was a good swordsman and an indifferent pirate. His captain, also, was shitty, and that's why despite his own skills as one of the Vutch islanders, he and the rest of his crew were captured by the Realm. Brought in and kept on a craggy island, he decided: Screw this, and ran for the edge of a cliff before they could herd them onto ships for sale to the Guild or some other nameless menace.

They didn't catch up with him before he leapt off. It was a bright and sunny day, so the brief, fleeting flash of gold as he fell didn't set them off. They had a schedule to meet, so they didn't send anyone for a few hours... and that was long enough for him to find a cave.

The ships left without further difficulty. He took a day to relax, and to think about what had happened. He knew, of course, what all that golden light and the smile of the man with four arms meant. The solution, clearly, was to head for home.

Getting to the faint speck on the horizon took a day of swimming and another day of sleeping in a sea-side cave. As he stared at the surface, feeling a crab start to fuss with his hair, he vowed that day that he would not live in a cave forever.

He got on a ship headed near home, and then on another. He kept himself on the down-low, as the Vutch say, and was able to get a ride back on a dried fish peddler's sloop. He found that an extremely minor scion of House V'Neef had been sent there to find the minor dragon lines that had been tracked into an structure in a central lagoon of the small cluster of islands. This extremely minor scion had beaten them there by the greater part of a day, having gotten the better edge of a storm the two Vutch had had to suffer. He and his two dozen men were planning to set up a new anchorage and pleasure station for the Realm's fleet.

The sassy little Dragonblooded fought with his bare hands, and had some kind of rudiments of martial arts. Jan had a thick steel sword and the sudden bursting wrath of the unconquered Sun. The rest of the Vutch had every incentive to move quickly. It was agreed that the ship never got there, and that the Vutch had no idea who this guy was; it was also agreed that after a quick session in the old temple-Manse, he would get the hell out.

One of the elders came to him later, with an old greenish-gold sword wrapped in dusty canvas that had been kept in a shed for the better part of a century. "What's it called?" he asked.

"We don't remember," the old man said. "Call it what you like. It's yours."
