The methods geomancers use to detect dragon lines can often be turned to the search for other things as well. By anointing the pendulum or spoon with a bit of the substance the thaumaturge wishes to find and then following the swinging of the pendulum, the thaumaturge will find the nearest concentration of the substance within (essence*10 yards) to a maximum depth of (essence*10 feet). Specific people or objects may be searched for but that requires an arcane link to the person or thing. If there is nothing to be found in the current search area, the thaumaterge may get a vauge directional indication of which way they should search next, if they beat a threshold of 4 successes on their roll. The Initiate version of this procedure works the same, but the detection area increases to (essence * 1000 yards or feet depending).

Elemental Summoners learn a variant of this procedure which lets them search for elemental materials (water, gems, and precious metals usually) and jade within a radius of (essence*100 yds or ft). It cannot be used to search for specific items.
