Over his life, Ozmathon Cahlash has amounted to many things. Starting with a simple farmer's upbringing, he was one of many of his childhood friends to be drafted for war, yet the only one to come home alive. Then dissatisfied with his former farming lifestyle, he roamed as a public speaker and sought his own education, resorting to selling his sword as a mercenary when times came low. He had defended and managed the defense of countless scrupulous and unscrupulous persons, before eventually coming to discover the love of a beautiful noblewoman. She accepted him as her captain initially, and his talent for military command brought him prestige enough to eventually marry her. He sired what became a respected line of gentlemanly war masterminds, and lent his council to all. After a rough struggle of a life, Ozmathon settled down at 53, finally retired from the field, to enjoy life with his wife and his youngest child, and only daughter. It was not to be. His handsomeness and his wife's beauty had trickled down into their children, but their daughter most of all. The dark supernatural forces of Creation conspired on her beauty, and a pall settled over the family estates. His wife took ill. His sons met fatal battles. His grandchildren were taken into safe seclusion. And, finally, as darkness fell one night, Cahlash discovered his daughter missing. He rode out of the estates that night, sixteen troops at his mount's heels.

Over the course of seven years, and an even larger quantity of distractions and adventures, Cahlash slowly pursued his quarry. It was a dark prince of the icy north, seemingly out of fable itself - fables of ghosts and the risen dead - that had taken his daughter. His men died, or departed, one by one, losing heart in the journey, until the dark prince was pursued by only Cahlash. He was haggard and diminished in his former handsomeness, but transformed by the endless wilds he had crossed. Now his resolve was exceeded only by his dauntless fervor to recover his little girl. He was hard as an elder stone and just as weathered. When he finally closed the gap, seven years had passed. Fifty-five when she was abducted, his daughter beheld him again at 62, shortly before Cahlash and the black prince came to blows.

Ozmathon's sword arced again and again, until he had broken it on the plates of the prince. Vicious wounds were opened in his frail chest, and he recognized he had no chance of honorable victory. So then, fevered and desperate, Cahlash flung himself bodily and violently began chewing and clawing at the prince, ripping at his gently pale incandescent face and raking at his frail seeming, but iron-hard neck. Eventually, Cahlash left the body bloody and still, and staggered back to where his daughter ought to be - only to find her gone. The strain was too much. Clutching at his wounds, trembling and with a horrible pain in his left side, Ozmathon began to suffer from a heart attack as the sun set.

In the coming of dusk, Luna's light brightly shone down on Cahlash, and she strode down a moonbeam to stand before him. He could not speak, just mumble and drool as he died.

"You who have ever been swept by the winds of war, now your wind is mine to direct," she said, smiling.

Cahlash shut his eyes and rest, then. It was all he could do. When he woke, it was day and she had gone - as had the body of his daughter's abductor. He rose to his feet slowly, and trudged through the wilds in search of tracks.
