Medicine: Sha'ul has a medicine man's pouch which contains healing herbs and the basic tools needed to make healing broths, teas, and other herbal medicines.

Money: Sha'ul has acquired an effective Resources ●●● due to his travels. His money is all in silver, and would be mostly worthless outside of the north.

Heart's Blood: Sha'ul has 2 additional shapeshifting forms: a brown bear and an eagle. He rarely uses them, however, preferring to be human, wolf, or in-between the two.

Description

Sha'ul is old, especially for an Exalt: in his late 50's, he should have by all rights died nearly a decade ago. His face and hands are wrinkled and rough, but his eyes sparkle with an almost youthful joy that makes him seem younger than he really is. His hair is gray and he wears it long and loose, down to his shoulders, with beads braided in in accordance with shamanic tradition. He is tallish and slim, and pale despite years living outside.

Back-Story

Pre-Exaltation

Sha'ul Spiritspeaker was born to a fairly insignificant family in the fairly insignificant Haslanti settlement of Leaping Isle, north of the city of Fort Bear. During his youth, he was sent to Windcreche as an apprentice to a whaler, but quickly found that that was not the life for him. He set off on foot to Fort Bear, hoping the long, cold trek would help him to find himself. During his march, he found himself frozen, hungry, and longing for the warmth and companionship of humans. He found his thoughts drifting back to the family and friends he had, both in Leaping Isle and in Windcreche. During one dark, still night, when the moon was high above the snow and the air was still as stone, he heard a wolf howl. Then, in response, another answered. The wolfs plodded over to him, circling his camp, watching and waiting, barking at each other. Watching the circles the wolfs plodded out, Sha'ul found himself understanding. For a brief moment, he saw the world as what it was- he saw the great cycle of birth, death, and rebirth. He could see the endless swirling of the air, and felt the energy of the world. He knew what he would do with his life- he felt the Calling, the pull of the world of spirits and gods. He would become a shaman, an intermediary between Creation and those who ruled it. When he reached Fort Bear, Sha'ul told his tale to anyone who would listen, and quickly found himself apprenticed to a local shaman. He learned quickly, and spent several years studying medicine, spirits, and the other necessities of being a shaman. Done with his training, Sha'ul went back to Leaping Isle, where he settled in, got married, and had one child, Hrafen. He grew to be very appreciated by the community for his help with the sick and the elderly, and he was happy.

Exaltation

His whole happy life came crashing down around him when Leaping Isle was attacked. It was quick, brutal, and devastatingly effective. A Deathlord known as the Shogun Christened in Blood invaded from the East, headed straight for Leaping Island. As the walking dead shambled onward, they destroyed everything they could find that would allow word of their progress to get out. When they finally got to Leaping Isle, they quickly swarmed over the city through force of numbers and the Shogun's own brilliant strategies. Sha'ul's son, a captain of the local militia, took up his sword to go join the fighting. During the hopeless battle, as the city burned and the dead filled the streets, a beacon of bright dawn light pierced through the smoke and haze; Hrafen burned gloriously in the light and power of the Unconquered Sun himself, bright as the Dawning sun, a beacon of hope for the dying city. Yet, despite even this, Leaping Island fell. Lost in the blur of battle, Hrafen fought bitterly to his death, sacrificing himself to save what remained of the city. Hrafen's anima burned bright as he died, whipping out across the ruins of the city and pushing back the forces of the dead. The Shogun, having already gotten what he had come for, decided not to try to reconquer the now-sanctified city and fled back the way he'd come. Sha'ul's wife died in his arms after the fighting, her lungs failing from the smoke that still filled the city's air. Overcome with grief over her loss and the loss of his son, Sha'ul fled into the winter night with nothing more than the clothes on his back. His Exaltation was slow coming. He struggled in the wilderness for days, starving and frozen. He scrounged for food where he could, but his mind was wearing thin, broken by the grief of his loss. As he lay in the snow, his will sapped out of him, he looked up at the moon and once again he saw the endless cycles of the world: an end is not an end, but merely the beginning of something else. He found himself laughing at his grief, and a let out a lupine howl in praise of the moon that had shown him his true path once again. He was wrapped in a swirling aura and he knew his place: he was a Steward of Creation, a protector. He knew, too, that his son's story hadn't ended yet. His madness was staved off, replaced with a fundamental driving goal: protect Creation from the forces that would harm it. But first, he would find his son.

Extended Backgrounds

Artifact: Sha'ul's one-dot artifact is the Thousand-Fold Knife, a moonsilver hunting knife which can change shape to any mundane tool of approximately the same size and weight. Using it gives a +2 to Survival pools.

<p>Mentor: Sha'ul's mentor is an old Lunar, a native of the East but living in the North. She served as his sifu for basic Martial Arts training, but Sha'ul never learned any Terrestrial or Celestial martial arts from her.

Solar Bond: Sha'ul's Solar Bond is Hjalmar Xun, his traveling companion. They are good friends and always have each others' backs.
