Winterlight Pawn Shoppe

by Hulen

"Okay, I've got five gems for you, all emeralds."
"Fill out this form, sir."

- Discussion between a customer and Nine Reeds, the proprietor
"No questions answered."
- Official Winterlight policy on inquiries as to customers

The Winterlight Pawn Shoppe is a small shop in Cinnabar. The owner, Nine Reeds, is known for his incessant complaints about the area and stolid refusal to move anywhere else. The shop itself is known for two things: trustworthiness and forms. Many items have belonged to the Pawn Shoppe, from all walks of life. It is where the poor go to pawn what even they can no longer use, where the rich go to sell what they do not want and where those who flaunt the law go to get rid of their ill-gotten gains.

Official policy is that while Nine Reeds himself will ask you plenty of questions, he won't answer any that're asked. Ever. While he may keep a voluminous set of records, no one but him, he promises, will ever see them. So far, he's either proven correct or anyone who'd know differently hasn't said anything. Thus, there's many customers, not all of whom are legal. The Winterlight will buy anything from anyone ... as long as they're willing to fill out the forms.

No one knows what Nine Reeds does with the forms, and many speculate that he may use them for blackmail. They are puzzled by the fact that the only thing the forms ask for, however, is a name, basic information about the customer and a detailed history of the item. Nine Reeds maintains that the forms are used only for customer information and nothing can make him reveal them.

Rumors

  • The Winterlight Pawn Shoppe is in the pay of the Council, and all forms go to them. That's why those who've done illegal transactions there don't speak up -- they're dead.
  • The Winterlight is the current owner of the Stone of Ebon Blood, along with a few other rarities.

Secret

  • Nine Reeds is in the pay of a mysterious man who calls himself Silver Palm. Not even Nine Reeds knows who Silver Palm is -- just that he pays well for Nine Reeds to maintain his voluminous record system. Every two months, Silver Palm visits the Winterlight to browse the records and then leaves. All Nine Reeds knows is that the man reads faster than any man he's seen before, never reveals his true identity and is the quietest man he knows. Nine Reeds himself has amassed quite a little fortune between selling some of the pawned items and Silver Palm's payments. Nine Reeds does not know what Silver Palm does with what he learns from the records, but no one has complained yet. Nine Reeds believes that Silver Palm has ways of verifying the truth of the records.
