Background

Twin Poisons Style – Jungle’s Warning Style
This Style is applicable with light animal hide armor. Treat attacks with yo-yos and wind-fire wheels as unarmed attacks for the purposes of charms in this style.

History
Those who know of this style debate over the proper name, whether Twin Poisons or Jungle’s Warning. The truth of the matter is that each is proper in its own right. Each name applies to its own Style both of which are very similar and all but inextricable save at the very core. Twin Poisons favors what is called the Serpent’s Branch while Jungle’s Warning favors the Frog’s Branch.

Only the central branch, or the core branch, varies. Each version of the style possesses a Safety, Form and Control charm the specifics of which differ from the Twin Poisons Style to the Jungle’s Warning Style.

Both styles are practiced by southeastern tribes, which utilize these martial arts for defense, movement, and hunting.

||The Serpent Branch||

Viper Lies in Wait</b>

A serpent lies in wait and lashes out with swift and deadly accuracy faster than the eye may perceive. In particular there are tree snakes in the southeastern jungles that wait coiled up on a branch for a bird to fly by and then lash out in a whip-like fashion. In emulation of these vipers the Martial Artist readies himself. This charm must be committed before battle, if it is when join battle is rolled add Essence success to the join battle roll and one half (rounded up) Essence successes to the first attack.

The Martial Artist whirls around twisting and flowing to build up momentum, bringing the full force of his body to bear at one point. When activated the Martial Artist may spend up to Dexterity motes on this charm, purchasing two extra base lethal per mote spent.

The character swirls around lashing out in quick uncoiling motions backward and forward while not repeating any motion. The character makes Essence actions but may not attack the same target in sequence. Actions may be sacrificed from this magical flurry to enhance the damage of an action that hasn’t been sacrificed. For each action that is sacrificed add the characters Strength + Martial Arts to the damage of the next attack in that flurry.

Simple and beautiful frogs are some of the deadliest animals of the jungle; brilliantly coloured but the slightest touch can kill almost any predator and easily any man. It is with the secret to this technique that the Martial Artist begins the Frog Branch. While this charm is active the Martial Artist may choose to do no damage and still convey wound penalties and supernatural effects, including poisons, disease and the effects of certain charms. If the number of health levels dealt determines an effect consider the number of health levels to be zero.

It is at this stage of their training that the followers of this still move on from merely internalizing the lessons of the beautiful arrow frogs, each must find a pattern unique to them in their poison induced meditations. Once the Martial Artist knows their warning they must travel into the jungle and collect the necessary components for their warning colours. The Martial Artist must collect a combination of the sap of the Hevea tree, the resin of the Tolembi tree, and the secretions of the Lac insect painted with the collected dyes necessary to establish the Martial Artist’s pattern. The Martial Artist’s hair and nails are almost always prepared additionally forearms, partial chest, abdomen, thighs, partial face, and back are all common. Whatever the combination about a third of the body must be covered, give or take. This hard but supple lacquer-like coating can stay on without this charm committed and may of the practitioners leave it on announcing their presences and skill. While this charm remains committed and the Martial Artist is not taking any hostile actions the Pronounced Secret attacks the MDV of anyone who can see the Martial Artist with a dice pool of Charisma or Appearance + Martial Arts + Essence. This is a compulsion effect not to attack the Martial Artist. The target may spend a willpower to ignore this for an action, once two willpower has been spent the individual is except for the rest of the scene. Further, while the Martial Artist’s pattern is in place they receive an additional 2L/2B soak.


The Chuan’s Trick</b>

This charm furthers the Martial Artist’s emulation of the arrow frog and can only be activated while the Martial Artist’s pattern is in place. Once this charm has been activated the culmination of their work becomes evident. The long stages of poison induced deliria come together in a transcendent moment of understanding and the Martial Artist becomes like unto the arrow frog itself. While this charm is activated the Martial Artist generates arrow frog venom that can be delivered by any unarmed attack or when struck by an unarmed attack. This poison is slightly weakened doing only 6L and having a toxicity of 3, otherwise it is like Arrow Frog Venom. The Martial Artist also gains an additional 2L/2B soak and 2 successes to escape grapples due to the preternatural suppleness they have taken on.

This charm represents the basic level of mastery of the Twin Poisons Style and is commonly referred to as the safety charm. The Yo-yo particularly the bladed variant can be rather dangerous and this understanding comes upon learning the first charms of each emulation branch. Once a student reaches this level of mastery she gains a modicum of respect from her Sifu. However, this is not the leveling off of difficulty that a student might expect…it is, as proverbially stated, “only the beginning”. While this charm is activated they may reflexively recall/rewind their weapon (in the case of the wind-fire wheel if it is within ten feet.) Further, the Martial Artist receives one success on unarmed martial arts attacks, adds the Clinch tag to her weapon, and may nigh perfectly control the movements of her weapon. While having a Yo-yo turn left in mid movement can be quite disconcerting it doesn’t do much more than that to ones opponent.

The tribes of the Grianii were never considered warriors even while their hunting skills were considered second to none, the Yo-yo serving as an excellent weapon for killing small game and utility but not as a weapon. Instead of abandoning their hunting skills for those of the warrior the tribesman adapted those exact skills. This form is the expression of that process and evolution. The Martial Artist learns to compensate for the flaws of her weapon and still utilize her hunting ability on the offensive. While this form is activated the Martial Artist may use the Yo-yo defensively without a stunt. Further, they may add their survival ability to their unarmed Parry DV calculation.

Masters of the Twin Poisons style share a name with the pinnacle charm; they are the Shamans of the Twin Poisons styles. A Shaman feels the beating heart of life around them and allows it to channel his strikes. Combined with the lessons learned from Serpent and Frog this technique is the ultimate strength of the Shaman. When this charm is activated the Martial Artist may reroll any ones on both their attempt to hit and their damage roll.

This charm represents the basic level of mastery of the Jungle’s Warning Style and is commonly referred to as the safety charm. The weapons of choice for the Martial Artist are difficult to handle, further it becomes necessary for the stylist to make split second decisions when defending her charge. The Martial Artist learns that it is necessary to be able to turn back on such decisions. Once a student reaches this level of mastery she gains a modicum of respect from her Sifu. However, this is not the leveling off of difficulty that a student might expect…it is, as proverbially stated, “only the beginning”. While this charm is activated the Martial Artist may spend 1 mote instead of 1 willpower to abort an action. Further, the Martial Artist receives one success on unarmed martial arts attacks and adds the Clinch tag to her weapon.

Jungle’s Warning Form</b>

It is common practice among tribes of the southeastern jungles to distrust outsiders, not uncommonly to the point of guarding against their intrusion and killing any such trespassers. The Jungle’s Warning Style was developed to guard against such intrusions and attacks against the homes of the Martial Artist’s tribe, without sacrificing their way of life to civilized warfare. While this form is activated the Martial Artist may freely parry lethal unarmed without a stunt and their soak from The Pronounced Secret increases by one. Finally, while this form is activated any self generated poison surrounds the Martial Artist in a haze out to their Essence in yards. This last effect only functions if the Martial Artist’s pattern is in place.

Masters of the Jungle’s Warning Style share a name with the pinnacle charm; they are the Ghosts of the Jungle’s Warning. A Ghost understand the anger of the jungle and can channel that raw emotion and the wood aspected flow of life and death through her unarmed attack enabling her for a moment to inflict terrible wounds. This charm allows the Martial Artist to be able to pull for maiming damage without an otherwise killing blow.
