Bells, Treaty of

Remismund, Pasha of Calligraphers, writes:

One of the great discoveries of the Cranefly School was the soul bell, an instrument tuned to the music of a single person's spirit. Soul and bell together formed a feedback loop; the energy of the spirit set the bell ringing, and the sound of the bell nourished the soul. This had the side-effect of trapping the soul in whatever state it was in, breaking the circle of reincarnation and even confining Celestial shards. Ed.: It is interesting that Remismund does not mention the Jade Prison here; it has a similar effect. Perhaps it was constructed on the same principles as well?

Soul bells were used to devastating effect in the Lace and Paper War, resulting in the breaking of many reincarnating dynasties. It was this shock that led to the raising of the Grand Solar Monarchy, the end of the Age of Amarnath.

The most important decree of the Treaty of Bells, a great mystical working under the protectorate of Eclipse oathbinders and Sidereal heavenweaving as well, was to outlaw the usage of these and similar spiritual instruments, except by specially licensed gods. While the Treaty has been broken many times since its signing, until the Usurpation it managed to prevent the larger offenses.
