Shield of Jade

Cost: 20 motes
Target: The sorcerer

The casting of this spell involves the sacrifice of talents of jade worth Resources **, but otherwise involes nothing more than a few simple words and gestures. At the completion of the rite, the jade dissolve into a shimmering glow, pulsing in the jade color associated with the caster's Aspect if the caster is Dragon-Blooded, or slowly changing through all five colors of jade if not. This glow is drawn in through the mouth, nose and eyes of the sorcerer, and as it suffuses his body, he takes on the stony properties of jade. His body changes to match the jade's slick solidity, taking on the same tone the glow carried moments before. (Non-Terrestrials become a blend of all five colors.) This change is more than cosmetic - the resilience of jade infuses both his body and his Essence.

Until the sun next crosses the horizon, the caster's unarmed attacks are considered to be made with a weapon made of a Magical Material - specifically jade. He may soak lethal damage with his full Stamina, and gains Hardness equal to his Stamina as well. These benefits are incidental to the spell's true purpose, however.

As with the other spells created by Teresu Gido, the spell's primary purpose is for dealing with spirits. Aware of the weakness Dragon-Blooded Charms present in the face of magical attacks, Gido designed this spell to act as a more serious protection. Against attacks made by spirits, elementals or demons, the sorcerer gains an additional lethal soak and Hardness equal to his Permanent Essence, and additional bashing soak equal to twice his Permanent Essence. Moreover, the difficulty of all Temperance- and Valor-based Charm use against the caster is raised by his Permanent Essence as well. The additional soak and Charm protection is lost against any opponent with a higher Permanent Essence than the caster.
