These snakes have a flatened pear shaped head with small brown and glod flecked eyes and vertical pupils and the scales are smooth and glossy. Marking are lighter colored rectangular patches on a dark brown body. These snakes have heat sensing organs similar to pit vipers. Pythons live in rainforests and grasslands, in the Southwest and West, dwelling near rivers as they are excellent swimmers. These snakes constrict thier prey and kill by asphyxiation.
