Cangiante

General notes

Cangiante is the city of gates. Of First Age construction, the city is surrounded by and shot through by imperishable walls from fifty to two hundred feet tall, with massive gates in many colors.

Politics

The current Keymaster, inheritor of an ancient bloodline power to control the gates, rules the city. Underneath the Keymaster, various guilds administrate the city's needs, all with the supervision of the House Sesus Satrap.

Sesus Virigila is the Satrap here. She prefers to spend her time on the hunt of the local dangerous wildlife, such as Furnace Rhinos, Hellboar, Bunyip, and Siege Lizards. She leaves the business of government to her clerks, many of whom have been bribed by the locals.

Trade

Cangiante sits on the end of The Slice, where the Crimson Road cuts through the hills to the Great Southern Desert. They are a major trade hub between food and water from the north and the riches of the desert to the south.

The Rightful Assessors of the Divine Proportion, the Guild of Tax Collectors, are under close scrutiny by all the powerful people in the city.

Religion

The city laws require that local religions follow the local Immaculate Calendar. Such ordinances are always enforced in the presence of the Realm.

Ximone, City Goddess of Cangiante, is much loved locally and worshipped as the protector of the city, especially from Lahar, god of the nearby Volcano. She tends not to manifest physically, instead appearing as divine inspiration, a sense of well being, or, on her festival days, a shower of divine sparks and a holy light.

Learning

Due to the wonders of the south that flow through the city and the complex mechanisms of the gates, many alchemists, gear smiths, Thatumaturges, and even some Sorcerers live and study here, crafting further wonders and prodigies from the riches of the desert.

Other

The Black Gates stand perpetually closed. Those who try to get into that section of the city are never heard from again.
