Introduction

Soldiers met upon a battlefield of mud, sinkholes and bugs, the swamp, Pit of Evergrey Despair was said to be home to a flesh devouring giant. But the soldiers knew naught of this, the people of the local villages were superstitious ignorant peasants who feared every Spirit near them. The soldiers were well armed intelligent men and the battle being fought in this swamp was over whose Monarch would rule these filthy peasants.

Both sides had committed atrocities on the peasants they sought to control, be it rape, murder, torture or otherwise.

Led by a Dragon Blooded Soldier on one side, and a God Blooded battle master on the other, they tore through the swamp, and the battle was joined.

A cry arose from the Dragon Bloods troops, when his headless body came crashing from the upper levels of the trees. The other side howled in victory until the head of their Leader was found impaled on his own Pike.

A creature dropped from the trees, landing amongst the assembled soldiers, shorter than your average man, his green warty skin and bulbous eyes, oddly shaped legs and hideously stretched mouth marked him as a Frog man. In his hands was gripped a spear that was marked with blood.

"Get out of my swamp."

One stupid archer, hidden amongst the assembled troops released an arrow at the abomination.

Almost negligently, the Frogman side stepped the arrow, then with a mighty leap soared into the air, and came down onto the cowardly bowman. A scream rent the air, as the frogmans spear plunged through the archers chest.

Leaderless and frightened the troops left the swamp. They returned home with stories of a Frog man that fought like a demon and brooked no trespassers. Neither kingdom sent troops through that swamp again.

In the middle of the swamp, there lies an oddly shaped house, it hangs between two hideously malformed trees, and has no apparent stairs, though the front porch hangs almost thirty feet from the ground.

In this house, a man lives, and to this house come many others, some like himself take the form of beasts, others worship the Unconquered Sun, or the Gods of the Underworld, all seek his efforts in their battles.

After feeding his guests, and showing his hospitality, he always says the same thing, "I want no part in the battles of your politics, I will survive as my Lady has asked of me. Perhaps one day a cause will arive that is worth dying for, perhaps not."

Cavlan Marki, Dweller in the Pit of Despair

Firstly, frogs rock. I had to do a Full Moon frog, though, a No Moon sorcerer, Changing Moon traveller could work as well, if not better. I have to admit, Chrono Trigger had a hand in the creation of Marki, but the image of a spear wielding Frogman, soaring high into the air and plunging down onto his victims caught my imagination. As well, alot of times, people want their Lunars to be earth shaking heroes, dead set on destroying civillization, so Makri is in response to that, he is a recluse who defends what he owns, perfects his art and survives.

Marki has a wide array of gifts, like most Warriors, he realizes the Value of versatility, and is wise enough to realize when he is outmatched. Patient, yet swift to act. He makes a slightly less playable Lunar than he does a good NPC, but, it shouldn't be hard to find ways to make him into a playable character.
