Back to the Shogunate

Blood Stains The Sand: Character Creation

Unlike the Dynasty, the Shogunate requires advanced training and what are referred to as 'student missions' before assigning the Dragon-Blooded to their new postings. With that in mind, 'starting' Shogunate Exalts are typically around thirty to fifty years of age, and have managed a few accomplishments and postings prior to the beginning of a game. The following experience charts are based around that.

If using

Step 1: Basics

Characters choose their Motivation, Aspect, Intimacies, and Anima as usual.

Step 2: Attributes

Attributes are less critical to Shogunate training than certain other fields. Exalts begin play with 7 dots of Primary Attributes, 6 dots of Secondary Attributes, and 4 dots of Tertiary Attributes.

Step 3: Abilities

The Shogunate encourages extensive training. Characters begin play with 40 dots of Abilities. They must begin with the following Abilities:

  • One combat Ability (Archery, Martial Arts, Melee, Thrown) at 2 and one other at 1
  • One social Ability (Presence, Investigation, Performance, Socialize) at 2 and one other at 1
  • Bureaucracy 1, Integrity 1, Lore 1, Occult 1, War 1

Characters may purchase Caste and Favoured Abilities up to 4; other Abilities can be purchased up to 3. Further purchases must be done with bonus points.

Step 4: Advantages

The Shogunate rewards its officers well, but all Dragon-Blooded who serve it must do so with distinction. Furthermore, while the Blood of the Dragons has weakened with time and interbreeding, it remains powerful in these days. Dragon-Blooded characters begin play with Backing 2 in any Military or Ministry, or in the political branch of Kethedra, as well as Breeding 2 and Resources 2. They then receive ten dots of Backgrounds. Full information on which Backgrounds can be purchased and to what levels can be found in the Backgrounds section, but the short list is as follows:

Allies, Artifact, Backing, Breeding, Command, Connections, Familiar, Henchmen, Manse, Mentor, Reputation, Resources

Shogunate characters begin play with a total of ten Charms. Characters who have had immersion in the Immaculate Faith, or who have received proper training, may trade three of these Charms for the two Initiation Charms required to learn Celestial Martial Arts. They may then trade any of their remaining Charms for Celestial Martial Arts Charms; they may buy up to five such Charms. Immaculates must learn from the Five Immaculate Styles; however, the Immaculate Faith has not yet spread quite far enough that all other Arts are lost.

Shogunate characters receive five dots of Virtues, which are spent as normal.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Members of the Shogunate are strongly encouraged to advance their Essence; all begin play with Essence 3. They start with normal Willpower, Essence Pools, and health levels for Dragon-Bloods.

Characters spend 15 bonus points on their traits. Bonus points are spent as normal, except that Charms cost 3 if Favoured, 4 if not; Celestial Martial Arts cost 4 bonus points if favoured, 5 if not. Characters may not have Essence higher than 4. Characters may purchase Merits and Flaws, according to house rules.

Finally, players are even more advanced than 'starting' Shogunate officers, and begin play with an additional 50 experience. Characters are considered to have 125 experience for the purposes of experience tables (see House Rules for full details).
