History

Yopheus Wu was an apprentice house-builder in the Hundred Kingdoms when he signed up for a caravan that would transport workers and tools to a recently discovered ore mine. He was supposed to help set up a small mining town.
The surveyors hired by the caravan patron were of questionable talent. They didn’t notice that the ground above the mine was much too unstable for a settlement. After a few days of construction work, the ground collapsed. Despite Yopheus’ warnings about the mistakes of the surveyors, almost everyone was killed in the disaster. He would have died too, had he not taken his Second Breath while around him the land was sinking.
Yopheus started hiring himself out to nations and rulers who wanted to found new towns. He surveyed the chosen sites and checked them for any natural or unnatural threats and dealt with them appropriately.
He didn’t realize that his new profession has a political dimension to it. People are ready to bribe or threaten him to change his assessments. But Yopheus would rather fight then lie in his reports and be responsible for deaths and destruction. Which is only all too well for these people.
