The Forsaken's Bastards
by Kalisara
- "I seen her drink a tankard of Ausengrim's strongest brew down straight and SMILE. Now you tell me what except an Anathema could do that."
- Losim Gray Gull, regular at the Sign of the Black Cock.
- "No. Comment."
- Singer of Winds, much-beleaguered abbot of the Thousand Flower Temple
The Forsaken's Bastards are a mercenary band presently operating out of Cinnabar. Although few in number, and although an uglier collection of scarred, broken-nosed, branded, one-eyed or lop-eared former criminals would be hard to find, they are well-equipped and fight with the discipline of Imperial legionnaires.
Their captain is a tall, lithe woman with bright eyes and a lazy grin, who bears the vivid sobriquet of "Beshra the Forsaken." She carries a scabbarded daiklave slung over her back, although no one has ever seen her draw it. With a mundane sword, or for that matter with bare fists, she is a formidable fighter.
A sizeable number of the good citizens of Nexus believe that Beshra is indeed what her name and sheathed blade would suggest she is, and greet the appearance of the Bastards and their captain with awe, terror and a quiet retreat. Those more knowledgeable in occult matters, however, suspect she's merely a cocky and opportunistic God-Blood.
Beshra is a regular customer at Nice Dreams, usually accompanied by a crowd of street children who appear not at all afraid of her. The proprietor Amylis Tiguare takes this in stride, as while Beshra may or may not be a demon, she is an extremely generous tipper.
The second-in-command of the Bastards is Gilgrim of Nighthammer, the self-proclaimed 'Ugliest Man in Nexus.' His face bears a close resemblance to the works of the notoriously drunken portraitist Cassio Valn - namely, several features are missing, including an eye, an ear and a half, and the tip of his nose, and the remainder is misaligned and twisted from years of violent living.
Unsurprisingly, the Bastards command very high pay - at least half of it for intimidation value.
Rumours
- Beshra is an actress hired by the Thousand Flower Temple to pose as one of the Anathema, terrorizing the city before being publicly defeated and 'slain' by the Immaculates as part of a cunning plan to drive Nexus into the Dynasty's arms.
- Gilgrim is - well, any once-famous and now out of sight personage you care to name, really. Considering the current state of his face, even the most expert physician would be hard-pressed to figure out what he originally looked like.
Secret
- Beshra is exactly what she says she is.
