Talents
In an attempt to cut down the number of Charms, I have come up with a special subset of Charms, which will be called Talents. Talents do not replace all charms in the game, but do end up handling a great many of them.
Talents come in one of three flavors.
Universal Talents apply to all Exalted, permanently enhancing an Exalted's nature in an area. Their individual strength may vary from Exalt to Exalt, but the basic formula is the same. Many unExalted may take Talents after a fashion.
Flavor Talents vary from Exalt to Exalt. Each Talent has a level, which is the minimum Essence and Ability required to take it. For Celestial Exalted, all Talents of level 2 and above require a Talent of the previous level in the same Path.
Celerity Talents are the perview of Celestial Exalted alone, and may vary slightly from Ability to Ability. They involve, as the name suggests, raw speed and additional actions.
Talents count as Charms for all purposes. This means they count against the 1-Charm per Turn limit unless a part of a Combo, etc. If a charm has 'Talent #' (where # is 1-5) under Prerequisites, that means that the Charm requires a Flavor Talent (not a universal one) of that level.
Some basic rules:
- No Talent is a true, unbeatable Perfect - that takes real Charms. At best, the Perfect can be comboed with a Success Adder and Doubler, allowing for some very impressive results. Even in this case, however, the Perfect defense Talent still trumps this offense.
- An active action is one where the dice get rolled on the Character's own volition - an attack or a leap.
- A passive action is one where the dice get rolled in response to something (typically an Active action) - a parry or dodge. A reaction.
- All talents are used solely for rolls regarding their ability.
- For the purposes of what constitutes a Turn depends on the situation involved. In Social combat andXerExaltedLite/War, an 'instant' is more like three seconds, for example, a 'Turn' being about a minute, rather than 3 seconds.
- Talents are never learnable by another type of Exalt.
- Dragon-Blooded have only two Flavor Talents, due to their often-specialized nature. Celestial Exalted have two Talent Paths:
- A Celerity Path (often granting additional actions or making such actions easier). Often Ability-tailored.
- A path specific to their Exalted type - Glorious for Solars, Decayed for Abyssals, Auspicious for Sidereals, Furious for Lunars, and Warped for Chimerae. These are useful in any situation for a given ability.
See the various Exalted types for their own Talent Paths.
