The Heroes of the Lanji
Jarl of jarls, the Jarl of the Lanji (or Jarltan) represents the Lanji as a whole and serves as Raventalon's shield-bearer. The actual control he has over the Lanji Nation is not inconsiderable, but is realistically limited by the overall isolation of his people. The current Jarl, Iol Carratok, is a large bear of a man riddled with scars from his frequent battles against the enemies of his people. More often found on the snowy site of battle against the Kuniktik than in Northgale, Iol is regarded as the bravest of warriors among the Lanji and to insult him is to earn the wrath of any young hot-blooded male that hears you. Even more renowned, though, is Ludmi Carratok -- head of the Carratok clan, and the effective leader of the entire Nation. Renowned for her great beauty ('like the first snow of winter'), fidelity, and fertility (already having given the Jarl several strong sons)...she is nearly as cunning as she is beautiful. Nor is her skill at arms lacking!
The Jarl of Eastmond Pass, a small village located about three shelves south of Everwinter Forest, is a brave and heroic figure named Kull Brokenbones. Eastmond Pass leads up through the forest, and hooks onto the Great White -- making it a fairly dangerous pass, and one of the easiest ways for the Kuniktik to surge down into the Nation. Eastmond Pass thus holds a somewhat larger population than normal, most of them warriors and scouts. Kull, in addition to leading the village itself, serves as war-leader -- he earned his deed name for a battle he won, even though he'd broken two bones in the process and had to be helped from the field. Doigar Frostbreath, is another renowned hero from Eastmond Pass. A scout of heralded skill, much of his time is spent up in the mountains or creeping along the Great White. On a few occasions he's brought back advanced word of massing Kuniktik and led ambushes high up in the mountains. While many match his skill in battle, his cunning and ability to survive is quite respected. Frauh Shalas, better known as the Widow Shalas, was the wife of the previous Jarl before Kull. Lost in a raid up in the mountains some 17 years ago, very liken frozen to death or captured by the Wyld Barbarians, Frauh has weathered the years since the death of her husband well and emerged as a figure of respect and importance in Eastmond Pass. She serves as a wisened, if graying, face in the council of wives that sees to the day-to-day affairs of the village.
Vile Foes and Monsters of the Lanji
Criminals of the Lanji are typically given no mercy. The most common sentence is for the offender to be stripped of his clothes and exiled into the wilds. Krullik was one so exiled, but his story differs from most in the simple fact that he survived -- survived, and joined with the greatest enemy of the Lanji. The details of how he managed to survive in the dead of winter are unknowable, but what is know is that he is no longer strictly human. Now Krullik is a monster, a beast -- larger, stronger, faster than most men. He runs like the blowing wind, has fierce claws, and never tires. Some who linger in the high mountains tell tales of narrowly escaping from the now-inhuman beasts maw -- but most tales of Krullix's survival comes from the survivors of the crippling Kuniktik raids that he personally leads.
