Our Lady of Seven Sorrows
Cold eyelids that hide like a jewel
Hard eyes that grow soft for an hour;
The heavy white limbs, and the cruel
Red mouth like a venomous flower;
When these are gone by with their glories,
What shall rest of thee then, what remain,
O mystic and somber Dolores,
Our Lady of Pain?
-- Algernon Charles Swinburne, "Dolores (Notre Dame des Sept Douleurs)"
"Who has Known all the Evil before us?"
"A pallid and poisonous Queen"
Called the Beautiful Tyrant and the Moon in the Wane, the Lady of Seven Sorrows is draped in layers of black veils and robes. She never appears outside her stronghold-palace without this protective covering, and those that have seen her unrobed do not have enough sanity left to accurately describe her. She appears to be in constant mourning, and her veils are always wet with tears. What she mourns for, though, no one knows, and none are foolish enough to ask.
"The Gods that Constrain us"
Servants of the Lady.
