Background

"She says, 'It's all gonna end and it might as well be my fault.'"
-Matchbox Twenty, "3 AM"

"If I had my way, if I had my way, if I had my way,
I would tear this old building down."
-Grateful Dead, "Sampson and Delilah"

Strictly Average

Unfettered Gale began life as Mnemon Deliah, a peculiar child in a unstable-at-worst, competitive-at-best household. As she grew towards maturity, she saw some of the most promising of her cousins and siblings culled by unfortunate accident, while some of the slow-witted ones were protected and cherished, so that they could perhaps become obedient tools in the hands of the far sharper elders. A few of the most promising children lived to Exalt, and it was to Deliah's surprise when her elder brother, a wise boy growing into a lethal man, was shuttled off to the Cloister of Wisdom once he finished his initial training.

It seemed as though, all of her life, she was surrounded by people dying-- and yet she lived. Late at night, she would lie awake in her bed and wonder if she were to be the next unfortunate accident, the next who swore a life of piety. She would occasionally ponder playing dumb-- hitting her head in a hard fall, perhaps, and becoming slow-witted and vapid. She always discounted the idea; she was too proud of her mind, and it was not worth the risk to stand out as particularly slow, any more than it was worth it to seem particularly bright.

So she maintained. Deliah showed promise, but never more than any other promising child. She had trouble with the physical art of war, but never more trouble than the average House child. While everyone around her was straining with all their might to stand out, Deliah spent every moment wishing to be forgotten.

And meanwhile, deep inside, she burned. She hated living in fear. She hated not knowing what would happen to her, being too afraid to truly show her full potential. She longed for the day that the Dragons would choose her, and hoped that Exaltation would take her away from this cold strategy game of a life and give her the ability to truly shine. But the years dragged on, and the Exaltation she awaited never came. She was sent to good patrician schools, written off, nearly forgotten.

Chosen of Endings

Many of those who did not Exalt took their future far worse than Deliah had, especially in her own household. One night as she visited her home, another young patrician snuck into Deliah's room, fearing that the young girl posed competition for some of the better, juicier positions for non-Exalts in the House. As Deliah awoke, a knife heading swiftly for her heart, she realized she had nothing to be afraid of-- that despite the deaths and failures of so many around her, she would be fine. Because everything around her had an ending, and hers was not for quite some time. As the Exaltation took her, she made short work of her would-be assassin and left the house that same night.

The Bronze Faction had been expecting Deliah to be an easy recruit; in fact, one of the Inner Circle had been planning a visit to her household the very next day to whisk her off to Yu-Shan. They were quite surprised when Deliah was nowhere to be found, and spent four years tracking her across Creation, leaving a happy whirlwind of emotional and physical destruction in her wake.

In a strange turn of events, Deliah recently sought out the gate in Nexus, and contritely confessed shame and embarassment at the way she shirked her duties. She was welcomed into the bureaucracy, of course, but something about her unsettles most everyone. She is docile as a kitten now, but there's something.. A mischevious glint in her eyes, a smirkish curl to her smile that keeps her from being actively recruited by either faction. She is mostly given busywork, and trusted by no one. The other Sidereals do just enough and allow her just enough to keep her happy.

Recently, she has been asking after her brother in the Immaculate Order..

Artifact: Quiet Typhoon, Starmetal Skycutter
This boomerang was the first way Gale interacted with the Sidereal sent to bring her into the fold; it was once his, but she managed to steal it from him. Upon returning to Yu-Shan, she demurely offered to return it, but he insisted she keep it as a gift. (Starmetal skycutters never hit an unintended target, and always return to their masters, sailing impossibly around every obstacle and bystander to reach victim or hand. Even a botched attack always brings the weapon into a graceful harmless path that ends in it's master's grasp.)

+2A, +5L, Rate 2, Range 50

Also, Gale's particular skycutter has its own ability: for every 2 levels of damage Gale inflicts on her target, the skycutter may raise or lower one of the target's virtues one point for the duration of the scene. It took Gale a while to get the hang of this, which lead to some very interesting fights indeed.
