Gem of Attention
Manse ••••
Trigger: Making An Entrance
Manses which produced these hearthstones were quite popular during the First Age, as they provided the wearer with an easy (if somewhat tactless) way of getting people's attention at social gatherings. Sidereal Exalted made these primarily for their Solar overlords, preferring to stay in the background themselves, drawing on their abilities to control fate to make sure everyone noticed the bearer of a Gem of Attention everywhere they went. However, after the Solar purge, the Sidereals discovered that since their brutal twisting of the constellation of the Mask, these stones no longer worked for them - their arcane fate is more powerful than even magic of this magnitude. In the more desperate times of the Age of Sorrows, almost all of the manses which produced Gems of Attention have been remodelled into more useful things, but one or two still remain.
Whenever the wearer of a Gem of Attention enters a social situation, it just so happens that everyone is looking his way. Their entrance will be flawless, unspoiled by random chance (that is, everything short of a direct attack on the wearer). If there is an orchestra or musician present, they will be playing suitable 'entrance music' for the wearer, whether a delicate melody for a beautiful girl or a dark threnody for an Abyssal warlord.
In addition, everyone who sees the character is staggeringly impressed by such an entrance. The entering character rolls Charisma + Presence or Appearance + Presence as they prefer (can't botch this roll, either), with the number of successes setting the difficulty for a Temperance + Essence roll not to be highly amenable to the wearer's suggestions. A botch on this roll means the character will be utterly subservient to the hearthstone bearer. Even people who succeed at the resistance roll will still be impressed by the entrance, just not supernaturally so.
Note that this power will function even if a filthy beggar crashes the dinner of a king - the guests will be impressed by his strength of character if not his scent.
Furthermore, the hearthstone wearer will remain impressive for the rest of the function. +1 dice on all Presence or Socialise rolls.
I should probably note here that using this Hearthstone makes stealth all but impossible. Luckily, you can suppress it's effect with a thought. Also, because of the Arcane Fate of Sidereal Exalted, this hearthstone has no supernatural effect on them (although the entrance is still impressive) and does nothing in their possession.
Comments
Say what about the Sidereal and the Loom of Fate now who when? Maybe I'm mis-remembering Sidereals, but when did they break loose of the Tapestry? I recall Arcane Fate as being basically an Astrological Effect of the Mask that worked a little too well. DS
Falcon - D'oh. You're absolutely right. I wonder where I got that idea from? Still, the effect works the same way. Edit edit edit...
