Character Description
History
This is the story of Kutsuragi, young privateer who hailed from the Skullstone Archipelago, and worked under the command of the already legendary captain, the Solar Exalt Moray Darktide. Loyal to his country and his captain, talented, and, though he didn’t know it, destined for amazing things as one of the great Solar Exalted similar to his own captain.
His story began, as these things often tend to, with a prophecy, and, in a particularly unfortunate turn of events, a prophecy made by a Gold Faction Chosen of Journeys who answers to the name of Grassland, and whose prophecies, like so many of his kind, have the habit of being right at all the worst times. This particularly prophecy was one which brought to Grassland’s attention that the young Kutsuragi would, in his very near future, take his place as one of the Solar Exalted.
Grassland found this information quite unpleasant, as Skullstone’s master, the Silver Prince, already had one loyal Solar subject, and the allegiance of another could prove most problematic. Therefore, Grassland devised a plan to wrest Kutsuragi’s future from Skullstone, and place it in what he saw as a much more stable position: directly under Grassland’s own tutelage.
It was therefore with much haste that Grassland made contact with one of the Silver Prince’s trusted followers and Deathknights, The Most Notorious Devil of Grave Occurrences. With his silver tongue, Grassland suggested to the Devil that Kutsuragi’s Exaltation would be an unstable element that could throw their country into chaos, and convinced him to act against the young privateer. The two hatched a plan to frame Kutsuragi for treason and have him be summarily executed by his own captain, Moray Darktide. For his part, Darktide, more than happy to quickly and painlessly remove a potential rival from his own path followed their plan perfectly, and the poor lad was sent to take four steps on a three-step plank, with his ultimate amount of time remaining being left solely for the siakas to judge. However, no sooner had the Mailed Fist passed again into the fogs than did Grassland reveal himself to his new pupil. Revealing the truth of his destiny and the plot against him, and leaving out only the details regarding his own part in the scheme, Grassland rescued Kutsuragi from the savage seas and sent him to the south of Creation to find the resting place of the one he was soon to be. Kutsuragi, for his own part, was already quite the sharp young man, and had some guesses as to the parts not mentioned, but was wise enough to keep silent about them.
Upon discovering the promised tomb, the Solar Exaltation did indeed come upon Kutsuragi, and with it an even stronger certainty towards Grassland’s treachery, as with the memories of his previous incarnation was recorded the identity of Grassland’s as well: the man who led a host of Terrestrial soldiers to the place he breathed his last during the Usurpation. Certain of Grassland’s own part in the current affair, Kutsuragi now saw his course as clear: he would have his revenge on the three men who wronged him, and began hatching an elaborate plot to ensure their downfall.
After several seasons biding his time and preparing himself, many times with the help of Grassland’s still-unwitting guidance, Kutsuragi returned to the vicinity of his homeland in order to carry out his own plot. The first leg of his journey brought him into contact with another of his kind, a man of Vutch descent who like Kutsuragi had received the Exaltation of the Unconquered Sun. Though the two still seem to be unaware of each other’s nature, it is hard not to be suspect of such a coincidence, especially given the nature of Kutsuragi’s background as well as that of the Vutch people’s history.
Grassland, for his own part in the mad scheme, remains unaware of Kutsuragi’s plans, and still sees himself shaping the boy’s own path. This lack of caution towards a dangerous Solar Exalt as well as his own future was the reason I was asked by my superiors in the Bronze Faction to take on this case. Though fighting amongst ourselves in this Time of Tumult is a luxury we can barely avoid, Grassland’s pawn, if allowed to continue his present course, will certainly bring disaster to Creation, and his attempts to carry out this mad plan of revenge run the risk of bringing the entire western portion of Creation under the control of the Deathlords. His time must come to its end at the earliest possible chance, and I intend to see this assignment through to its only natural outcome.
