Warp & Weft

I was confused. Astrology in the Sidereals book told us a lot about what it looked like when Sidereals did astrology, but it didn't really tell us what happened. It left my group in the lurch.

So I put this together to tell us, what happens when astrology happens?

It's built to look like shaping combat; Fair Folk did all this work to tell us what abstract fighting looks like in Exalted, so why waste it?

The one big-deal thing I say differently is to call astrological attacks weaving attacks, just so we can tell it apart from shaping. It's the same thing, though. Anything that protects you from shaping should protect you from weaving and vv.

Weaving Attacks Summary

You cannot manipulate the strands of destiny with a cluttered mind. The soak calculation for weaving attacks is always (attacker's soak trait + defender's soak trait); the trait in question is only listed once.

|| Strand || Accuracy || Damage || Soak || Health || || Spinning ||Familiar ||Connections ||Conviction ||Compassion + Spin || || Knotted ||Acquaintances ||Manse ||Temperance ||Appearance + Knot || || Snaring ||Allies ||Artifact ||Socialise ||Valor + Snare || || Tangled ||Salary ||Savant ||Valor ||Conviction + Tangle || || Severed ||Backing ||Sifu ||Compassion ||Temperance + Sever ||

A few random thoughts/questions:

  • Is this first or second edition cosmology? I'm assuming first, since both Astrology and Wyld-Shaping mechanics are currently undefined in 2nd edition (to best of my knowledge).
  • I always thought it was pretty clear happened when sids did astrology: they put in a request to the Loom for some funky effect, and the spiders wove it in. The Loom, as the effector of causality in creation, then makes it happen, the same way it makes everything else in creation happen.
  • Existing mechanical differentiations between shaping and astrology give two starkly different flavors: shaping is freeform, and rather primal; astrology is defined, more like utilizing some very powerful tool. I kinda like that.

Still, interesting. ~Capric

It's pretty clear what Sidereals to do cause astrological effects to occur. It isn't clear what the large-scale results of these small-scale effects are on the world.

Ah, so you are defining how the Loom enforces reality on creation then? ~Capric

Three things strike me here. 1) To me, the effects of astrology are one of the few clear things about the whole process (see HowToEnrichCattleProduction for a semi-decent example of applying astrology to a problem; also the "Applying Astrology" section of OptimizingAstrology is somewhat useful in seeing how the mechanics change reality), 2) The mechanics of shaping combat are almost more confusing than astrology mechanics, and 3) the results of shaping on Creation-based targets is even more ambiguous than astrology. So... you have your work cut out for you. Good luck. - Wordman
