Culture, Society, and Anachronism in Exalted: Kawaii

The cultures of Exalted: Kawaii contain a variety of anachronisms or anachronism equivalents both for humorous effect and to create a culture gradient. These anachronisms are most common in the Kawaii Isle and become progressively more rare (in most cases) as you move away from it into the Threshold, and even as you move from urban to countryside on the Kawaii Isle.

Amusement Parks : Similar in many ways to those of the real world, these are relatively rare, but draw huge amounts of tourists. They are usually owned by some kind of Exalted, who takes disturbances poorly.

Artistic Mass Combat : Battles in the Kawaii: Exalted world are highly staged, and bear a great deal of resemblance to, say, the gang confrontations in West Side Story, as conducted by thousands of people at a time. This is why Tiger Warrior Training comes under Performance. This page details the organization and training of the Imperial Legions to illustrate this.

Computers : The Ultimate System is a cross between the Loom of Fate in standard Exalted, a giant mainframe and the Internet. The Mountain Folk and the Goddesses are the main beings who have access to this particular anachronism, and they do all the usual things with it that we do in the real world in addition to it maintaining the universe. Mountain Folk society, in fact, revolves around MMORGs. The major Goddess factions revolve around Operating System issues and jokes.

Evil Business Organizations: Practically obligatory in a Storyteller system game. They have their own page.

Karaoke : Very popular in the Kawaii Isle, especially with magical girls. The needed equipment is a level 1 artifact in its simplest form; Karaoke facilities can be found in any Blessed Isle city of 10,000 or more. Very large cities have many competing ones. In the Threshold, such facilities are found usually only in major noble homes and in major cities, though some places, such as MinasLankWaterHawk have a fair number.

Manga : Manga is very common, even in the threshold, anywhere that there is any literacy at all, as the combination of pictures and art makes it easier for the barely literate to read things. It is a huge business, highly developed, in the Kawaii Isle, MinasLankWaterHawk, and the major cities of the Threshold, but it even penetrates into the countryside. Connected to this is the heavy use of pictographic signs to help communicate to the illiterate.

Tourism : Rich tourists flock all over the major cities and sights of the world, showing up at the most inconvenient times. There are cruise ships and package tours, for those with Resources 4 and 5, and even budget ones for those of Resources 3. Everyone else is out of luck.

Again, to note, as you head into rural areas, the abundance of anachronisms declines, so in small farm villages, life is very medieval and things like amusement parks are only distant legends.
