An eclipse submitted for my PbP game StalkerofShadows

Cynis Marisa was born and raised in a patrician household on the Threshold. Unlike her stronger-blooded peers, Marisa was keenly aware that she would actually have to work for a living. With that in mind, she threw herself wholeheartedly into her schooling, picking up the various skills that typified the perfect Dynast's housewife; such as an education in the arts and letters, learning how to manage the household staff and finances, and so on. Her efforts paid off when she was betrothed to a Tepet scion; though he was not particularly interested in women (he preferred men), she understood, and played her part to the hilt.

Despite the marriage being an arranged one, she felt genuine sadness when she received the news that he had perished when the Tepet expedition to the North had been crushed. After all, her husband had been a kind man, despite his lack of sexual attraction to her. After the obligatory period of mourning, she decided to travel to Halta, both to expand the family business which she had inherited upon her husband's demise, and to visit the site of his death.

Unfortunately for Marisa, she and her entourage were taken hostage by a Linowan raiding party who mistook her for Haltan nobility. Unfortunately for the raiding party, they chose to flee through the forest floor... where the Fair Folk lurked. The raiding party tried to use her as leverage to gain safe passage through the raksha ranks. It was all she could do to calmly tell them that they had the wrong person, moments before the fae hounds fell on them.

This left Marisa and her servants to the tender mercies of the Fair Folk noble leading his force of hunters. Though she'd heard stories of how the fae consumed mind and soul in their feeding, she gritted her teeth against her fear, and offered herself to the noble in exchange for the safety of her staff. "I hope I haven't misjudged you," she said. "But your underlings have had their sport, and a gift offered freely should be worth more than ten taken by force, no?"

The raksha noble was pleasantly surprised by Marisa's selflessness, and just as they shook hands to confirm the deal, a golden Caste Mark bloomed on her forehead.

"You didn't do that on purpose, did you?" the raksha asked.

"Well, no, not really. But this definitely changes things..."

In the end, they worked out a deal; Marisa and her servants would go free, and in exchange she would be his eyes and ears in Halta. Some of her people were rather alarmed at first, but the judicious application of Solar magic, combined with the fact that their mistress had exchanged herself for them before coming into her power, kept them loyal to her.
