Solar Awareness Charms by BillGarrett

Shadow-Spotting Glance

 Cost: 1 mote
 Duration: Instant
 Type: Reflexive
 Minimum Awareness: 3
 Minimum Essence: 2
 Prerequisite Charms: Surprise Anticipation Method

Some Solars possess an innate sense of pursuit; for many, it is a product of the hunted life they endure. If a Solar comes under extended observation or is shadowed (regardless of motive), she may reflexively activate this Charm, in the manner of Surprise Anticipation Method, to become aware of it. The Charm requires only a single activation to detect two or more observers working in concert, although several independent observers (or groups of them) will cause the Charm to activate multiple times. The Storyteller is advised to ask the player beforehand about his policy on activating this Charm, to avoid giving away too much information.

This Charm does not tell the character where the shadow(s) are automatically, although the Storyteller may provide a Perception + Awareness check to determine this. The Charm does not automatically pierce supernatural stealth; in cases where an observer is using magic to conceal his presence, the Storyteller may roll Perception + Awareness vs. Dexterity + Stealth, Essence vs. Essence, or any other roll that seems appropriate to the concealment Charm being used.

Tiger's Eyes Technique

 Cost: 3 motes
 Duration: Instant
 Type: Simple
 Minimum Awareness: 4
 Minimum Essence: 3
 Prerequisite Charms: Surprise Anticipation Method

Through close observation of another character's body language, stances, and hand and eye movements, the Solar may appraise that character's fighting prowess and combat confidence. Against unguarded opponents, the character need not roll. Against people wishing to conceal their true power from detection, the Solar must roll Perception + Awareness against the target's Essence; failure reveals nothing.

This Charm provides three pieces of information. First, a rough estimate ("weak", "best in the world", "above average", etc.) of the rating of the subject's most favored combat ability. Second, how much genuine confidence the subject has in coping with the rigors and dangers of her current environment (a function of Valor and the level of danger, as judged by the Storyteller). Third, whether the character has Charms or other magic (including artifacts and talismans) that activate based on the presence of danger, such as Surprise Anticipation Method or Reflex Sidestep Technique. This Charm will not identify the precise nature or source of such defenses, merely that such warning magics are present.
