To Break Down Heaven's Door

As all wise men and women know, the will of the gods is fickle. They can raise one man to dizzying heights, even while casting another down into pits of despair, torment, and plague. One cannot question this divine benevolence, for it is all, so they say, planned and prepared to guide the future toward a glorious completion.

This is not the case, as all wise exalts know.

Indeed, many of the gods are corrupt and lazy, unable or unwilling to fulfill their mandated role in the maintenance of the world. The Celestial Incarnae, mightiest of all beings but for their dead and imprisoned progenitors, are distant, enraptured by the Games of Divinity. They provide only the most cursory of guidance to their exalted servants, if they deign to notice them at all. But the Exalted have the power to remake the world, with or without heavenly oversight.

Us mere mortals, we ain't so lucky. Most of us lack the destiny, the fate, the spiritual power to be a candidate for Exaltation. And so, we languish in mediocrity, standing in awe of even the Dragon-Blooded, least amongst the gods' servants that they are, while they power over us with Essence and jade. Ghosts enthrall us; demons enslave us. All around are fairies to eat our souls, gods to demand unlawful and impossible worship, even the Chosen themselves, who lord over us without a care for our well-being.

But what if you could change your fate? What if you could reach out and grab that power, filch away a shard of that divinity?

What if, instead of relying on some aloof deity, you could choose, for yourself, the path of glory?
