Plot:

Nilus was a demon-hunter whose best friend was the Dawn Caste, Janil D'vough. Janil was a mighty warrior who had taken a young Dawn caste as an apprentice, Caras Maran. Maran was the new incarnation of a friend of Janil and Nilus who had fallen in battle against a third-circle demon who had been summoned by a foolish sorcerer and had escaped binding. Janil began to grow more prideful, becoming quicker to anger, arrogant and impulsive. Janil was one of the earliest Solars to fall to the Great Curse, raising armies to his banner and viciously conquering any city or nation that did not give him proper deference. Maran was swept up in the tide of worship and power and obeyed his master unquestioningly.

The Solar Deliberative summoned Nilus to their presence and Kryal the Stern ordered the Night caste and his elite loyal Dragon-Blooded hunters to defeat Janil and return him to the Deliberative for judgement. Nilus was troubled by the order but obeyed nonetheless. Nilus and his retinue engaged Janil and Maran and were defeated after two days of fighting. Janil's godlike martial powers were too strong to be defeated. Janil paused over the fallen form of Nilus to gloat at his friend. At this moment Maran realised the depths to which his master had fallen and took up Janil's sword, Naz'Shiar, and beheaded the unwary Solar. Maran then vowed to fight injustice with his master's sword and surrendered to Nilus. Nilus returned to the Deliberative and Kryal presided over a tribunal and found Maran guilty. Prior to sentencing Nilus spoke on the Dawn's behalf, citing how he defeated Janil and requested that he be able to continue the apprentice's training and teach him the path of honour. Kryal was a long-term ally of Nilus and agreed to release Maran to his control.

Satisfied with the outcome but still grieving for the loss of the noble Janil he knew, Nilus sought to consult with the greatest Manse-builder of all time, Kal Bax, but the master was unavailable. Instead, Nilus was sent Ozandus Pal, Bax's most talented apprentice. Ozandus and Nilus designed the city that would be named Albin'shar ("Lost Friend" in Old Realm) and in designing the Solar Circle spell that would be used to build the city. Ozandus also helped Nilus cast the long and draining ritual, enlisting the help of another sorcerous friend of his, an Eclipse caste named Magnus Vocan. Magnus was a member of the diplomatic corps of the Deliberative, assigned to Rathess as part of a delegation maintaining relations with the Dragon Kings. Magnus was impressed with the design of Albin'shar and spent much of his time flying between it and Rathess. Magnus introduced the spiritual leader of Rathess, a Zenith caste by the name of Pleasant Clouds, to Nilus and the city of Albin'shar.

Pleasant Clouds was a lover of knowledge and used her influence to help Nilus fill the great library of Albin'shar with tomes of knowledge. Ozandus Pal helped as well, enlisting one of his master's allies, Aure Orchester, a great traveller of the Eclipse caste. Aure agreed to travel the length and breadth of Creation to collect knowledge to be interred in the library. He and Nilus travelled to Rathess to see Magnus and Pleasant Clouds and enlisting the aid of Relza (Satrap to Vanileth, Shogun of Artificial Flight, in Rathess) in crafting a flying ship for him to sail across Creation. Throughout the course of collecting knowledge a circle bond was formed. Kryal frequently visited Nilus and Maran, eventually taking Maran as an apprentice to finalise his training and seconding Maran for command of a Deliberative taskforce suppressing the Wyld at the boundaries of Creation and expanding the might of the Solars.

Janil would wander the lands of the Underworld for centuries, his rage at the world preventing him passing peacefully into the cycle of reincarnation. Eventually he was approached by the Malfeans and offered a position as a Deathlord. This figure remains mysterious in the present day, his motives questionable. What is known (by his Deathknights and a select few others) is that he is searching for a long lost artifact that once belonged to him. A golden sword that has been seen roaming the Scavenger Lands in the hands of a Dawn caste solar named Scar.

Dermanar the Unseen was a Night Caste. Dermanar and Nilus originally apprenticed together and were good friends, having participated in many campaigns for the Solar Deliberative. Back in the First Age, Dermanar was a kind, generous person. He died in the usurpation and his Essence was captured and imprisoned in the Jade Prison. Unfortunately, centuries later the Essence of Dermanar was released and captured by the Deathlords, and was one of the first used to try and create Abyssal Exalted. The experiment was a failure and the Essence fled into the world, but it was tainted by the process. While still a Solar Essence and never close enough to be an Abyssal, the Essence sought out the potential for perfection in the skills of the Night Caste, and also searched for beings of low conscience and high callousness. It found these in Soulban. With his unfortunate demise, the Essence has again fled back into Creation, seeking another potential-Solar who could turn out to be an enemy to all humanity.
