Pretty much as it said on the opening page; Appearance is slightly too powerful as it stands. It should be a complement to social combat, a weapon offering an accuracy/defense bonus, not an artifact offering free Second Excellency. With this as the basic precept, I figured I'd make a hotfix to be reviewed, tested, and used or discarded as you like.

Basic change: Appearance now gives a dice bonus or penalty to the aggressor in a social attack, up to +/- 3. Appearance 5 person attempts to sway loyalty of Appearance 2 person, gets +3 dice to her pool. As a natural effect similar to a weapon's Accuracy, these do not count against dice adders, but similarly do not increase the pool's calculation for the purposes of an excellency. [A Solar still only has Cha+Pres for adding dice with First Excellency, not Cha+Pres+3].

Perfect Symmetry (Lunars) and the innate ability of Heart-Cutting Style (Raksha) relax the limit to +/- [the higher of 4 or Essence]. So an Essence 2 Lunar using Perfect Symmetry gets to apply up to +4 on her own social attacks and -4 on her enemy's, given sufficient difference of App.
Starting at Essence 4, Perfect Symmetry also allows the trading of bonus dice for successes at a 2:1 ratio when active.

Further alterations to the base effect of Appearance will be added as they come up. Solar Appearance modification should remain within the bounds of Solar charm use - such as, raising one's own Appearance by a given amount, not 'completely invalidating a charm-enhanced weapon's use'.

Effects that previously completely negated Appearance, such as Raiton's Mask and the Ink Monkeys charm Staring at the Sun, now become scene-long if not already and stage the effectiveness of an opponent's appearance down by one step; unmodified appearance cannot offer any dice bonus or penalty, while Ess 2-5 Perfect Symmetry only offers +/-3, and Ess 6+ Perfect Symmetry offers +/-6 rather than an infinite enhancement.
