(Introduction)

Anagyros, Laughing Demon

Symbolism : Caprice, mischief, sexuality, fertility.

The Greek satyr was part goat and part man and represented licentiousness, mischeif and caprice. The goat was also the symbol of pan, the woodland god of the flocks, fertility and nature. Pan was a lustydeity whose emblem was the phallus. When hunting was poor of the flocks declined, the Greeks would blame Pan and beat his image with squills, a type of bulbous herb, to release his reproductive energies. Pan was thus an early "scapegoat."

Russian peasant folklore tells of a similar mischevious forest spirit, the leshii, which had goat hooves and horns as well as black fur, wings and a tail. The greek god Dionysus was also frequently represented by the image of a goat. Someone with a Dionysian character was considered frenzied, lawless,or possessing orgiastic propensities.

Many people see the Lunars as monstrous, but even Nasketew follows the Silver Pact, in his own way. But Anagryos is an unabashed villain. A creature that is loathed even by the worst of the Lunars. He is something lost to the wyld: a Chimerae. To me, the goat represents more than just fertility... there was once a lot of terror associated with the satyr. The half-goat was a creature of chaos. There is a reason the Lashii is such a close description of the typical imagery of a demon.

Anagryos also shows another fun concept: the Wyld Lunar. A being that has fully adapted itself to the Wyld. If you're going to play such a being, though, I recommend "Resisting the Wyld's Lure," or you will likely go insane from too much Wyld exposure... like Anagryos.

While I made the goat evil, it doesn't mean you have too. The prancing, happy, seductive creature is quite possible as well. Pan was also a creature of music and wonderment. Further, Ma-ha-suchi has the goat totem, and he is DEFINITLY a Full Moon warrior. Do not underestimate the power of an angered Billy goat. Finally, with their associations with chaos and the world of the wild, a goat can be a good No-moon... with a few changes, Anagryos could easily be no-moon.
