Some ideas I have concerning specialties. To be honest I could see this being canon but the books are not clear. =) Comments are always welcome.

Specialties and Requirements

A specialty in a focus for an ability. Each ability can have up to three dots of specialties.

From E:134 - Once purchased, a specialty gives your character an extra die on all rolls related to that particular facet of the Ability. A character with Survival 2 and a specialty in "Wyld" normally just has two dots of Survival, but since he's specialized in the strange and dangerous landscape of the Wyld, when he is foraging or pathfinding in regions of Wyld influence, he has three dots instead.

Expanding from the above quote I've decided that specialty dice will satisfy ability requirements. Whenever an item, activity, etc. requires a certain number of dots in an ability relevant specialties help satisfy the requirement. Some examples follow.

To use a hook sword a character needs a Martial Arts of 4. A character with a MA of 2 with two specialty dice of MA:swords can use the hook sword without penalty.

To design a level 5 manes a character needs Craft(architecture) 7, Occult 7, and Lore 7. A character that has those three abilties at 5 and 2 in manse specialties can design such a manse.

The charm Iron Whirlwind Attack requires Melee 5. A character with Melee 3 and Melee:swords 2 can learn IWA, assuming they train with a sword. They can also use IWA with swords. However they can't use IWA with spears lances or other weapons until they raises their melee to 5 (or 4 with a relevant specilty).
