Raising the Earth's Bones

This spell is a time-consuming ritual which reshapes the ground and bedrock in to a structure of the caster's design. Each casting of this spell cannot raise a structure more than ten meters tall or more than a few acres across, but repeated castings of this spell can raise more complex structures.

The caster must first design the structure. This can be easy and fast for simple earth-works or box housing, but a more complex structure could require a Craft action or Venture. The spell can only reshape local earth and stone, so not all designs work in all locales. You can do more in mountains with strong granite than in sandy deserts. The spell will make sandstone from sand and form soil in to rammed earth, however, so most designs will work.

The caster next marks their design on to the earth. It's best to use stakes from fresh-cut saplings, but anything will do so long as the caster does it themselves.

Finally, the caster Focuses Will for five to ten minutes as their design slowly takes shape. Anyone in the way of the shaping stone will immediately know what's happening, and can ruin the ritual whenever they want, so clear the area first. If you want to entomb someone with this spell, they need to be dead already or close to it.

Raising the Earth's Bones

You ground your will in to the earth with cut sapling branches or pure magic, and shape it.

This spell is a complex ritual Venture where the caster reshapes the terrain to create a structure of their design from local soil and stone.

Shaping A Stone Structure

Time scale: One scene

Base obstacles: 2

Common dice pools: (appropriate Attribute) + Craft

Common obstacles:

  • Designing the structure (Difficulty from 0 to 8. Take the difficulty to design the structure the sorcerer envisions without this spell, and then subtract 2.)
  • Controlling the flowing earth (Difficulty 3)
  • The structure is larger than a few acres in size. (Difficulty 7)
  • The structure is more than four stories tall. (Difficulty 7)

Common advantages:

  • Skip the 'controlling the flowing earth' obstacle. (3 successes).
  • Learn something useful or interesting about the local soil and stone. (3 successes)
  • Sense any other magic that has been performed on or with the earth you shape. (5 successes)
  • The structure is polished, decorated, and beautiful. (Any number of successes.)

Common consequences:

  • The available earth and stone cannot be made strong enough to suit the caster's design, which must change.
  • The spell undermines or even collapses nearby structures as it draws on the earth.
  • The resultant structure has unsightly warps, faults, and growths.
  • The spell disrupts geomancy, attracting unwelcome attention.

At three consequences, the structure collapses outright upon completion.
