All PCs receive XX Background dots

The new Background system works by determining who the player is, what he does, and how much 'weight' (in dots) these things have. All facets start at one dot, and a character may willingly reduce a facet to 0 dots, transferring the dot elsewhere. They may not have more than two facets at 0 dots.

*Who does the character know? (Contacts)

This represents just who the character can call on for information, needful things, and the occasional bit of aid in an emergency. Contacts are real people with real lives, and some may be able to do great things... for a price.

A character with Contacts 0 knowns no one and has to do their own legwork. One with Contacts 5 practically trips over a useful ear on their way to lunch every other day, and twice on weekends.

*What does the character do? (Status)

The character's profession (or lack thereof) can well affect how they are viewed in the public eye. It can also serve as a basis of how much disposable income the character has, as well as how quickly they can acquire rare and expensice things.

A character with Status 0 is effectively a pariah or simply quite poor. One with Status 5 is a luminary on par with kings and high priests of the Mad Gods, and most likely just as cash-rich.

*When did the character come into their present profession? (Experience)

Simply enough, experience matters. While one may be a supergenius who can crunch numbers in their head, nothing can replace hands-on experience. Such experience also forges strong bonds within ones' field, and well-learned members of the character's field can attract followers and new avenues of work faster than newcomers.

Experience 0 characters are just starting out, and have to scrabble to fit into the established culture and society of their profession. Experience 5 characters *are* what establishes that culture and society.

*Where does the character's profession have an impact? (Notoriety)

People are often known first by their fame. Being a capable craftsman is one thing; being memorable, be it good or bad, is another. In this case, even 'bad' publicity is good, as the character's well-known. Perhaps just not in the way they'd like...

Notoriety 0 characters are total unknowns, for better or for worse. Notoriety 5 characters are practically living legends, and enjoy the 'perks' of their fame/infamy.

*Why does the character do what they do? (Reason)

Simple; everyone has a reason for taking the path that they did. Was that reason a weak one made in haste that holds little water, or one that's forged from some intense emotion or event?

Reason 0 characters do what they do... just because. Their work has no passion. Reason 5 characters are often slaves of their own professions, their focus giving them untold skill and strength in trying times.

*How did the character come to be what they are? (History)

One's past is just as important as one's present and future, and some pasts bring with them some interesting baggage. Whether the contents are fair or foul is another thing entirely...

History 0 characters have numerous skeletons that wait for the right time to leap out of their closet, or that already have leapt. History 5 characters have rich histories that lead to people, places and things that remain a possible source of assistance in trying times.
