Before The Rain

Once upon a time, there was a world. Globe-shaped, it was, and teeming with life. On it, the birds of the air and the beasts of the field were ruled by Man. And above Man stood the Gods, who wielded the Concepts that defined existance to perpetuate that which had been started before any of them could remember.

They numbered eight, the Gods. Seven held the power to shape both world and Man, and the last one acted as the great intercessor between divine and mortal. This entity, known once as The Humble King Without A Throne, was the one who filtered the prayers and desires of Man to his sister Gods; while many, many prayers reached the others, some were held away, a fact that caused some concern amongst the seven. For the longest time, they accepted things as they were, even as thoughts of what it was that the Humble King kept from them. One day, however, the seven met in one place, and the God who governed the methods of Darkness, the one now known as The Beautiful Horror Who Breaks The Maiden, implored her sisters to finally shed the shackles that their brother had clapped onto their wrists and to grasp their full share of power. One by one, they agreed, and a plan of action was put into place.

On the first day of the cleansing period known as Consecration, The Gross Spark That Ate The Sun Whole opened wide her jaws, and caught the Sun in her mouth, shrouding the land in darkness.

The Mistress of Clouds Adorned In Rainbows and Ice drew into herself the Concept of Art, and Man forgot how to sing, to dance, to make.

The Dire Diamond Glittering With Want drew into herself the Concept of Devotion, and Man forgot what worship was about, and the prayers of Man ceased to flow.

The Bitter Ocean Taking the Fire Into Her Bosom drew into herself the Concept of Love, and Man forgot the joy of love, and terrible fighting broke out.

The Gnarled Oak Bearing A Million Seedlings drew into herself, just a little, the Concept of Life, and many of the weak and young among Man died instantly.

The Blind Maiden Whose Tears Are Blood did not draw anything into herself, but nor did she stop her sisters. Nonetheless, the sight of the horrors they had brough upon Man drove her to maddened sorrow, and she gouged her eyes out in her despair. Thus did the sky rain blood and saltwater without end.

The Beautiful Horror, without the Maiden to counterbalance her, swallowed into herself the Concept of Secrets, and the hidden horrors of Man lay bare for all to see, enough to aggravate them further. Man, in its horrible state, seemed poised to destroy itself.

The Humble King, witnessing the events and unable to reach his sisters, stepped outside of his heavenly city-body, allowing his spirit to sweep along the earth, seeking the source of this disaster. Without warning, the gods (sans the Maiden) struck as one, shattering his defenseless body and sending it screaming towards the land of Man. In this act, they were forced to release the Concepts, and Man came to his senses in an instant. Thus, all who lived watched at the immense City of God came roaring towards them; panic erupted, but none could escape.

The Humble King's spirit, as broken as his body, watched on as well, powerless as the world shuddered violently. The grand nation of Man lay directly in the path of the Humble King's body, and it was simply crushed. From the point of impact, growing veins of golden crystal streamed all over the world, splitting seas, shattering continents, and obliterating islands. Once the veins has completely carved spider-vein tracks into the land, the rumbling stopped. The Humble King simply could take no more, and his consciousness collapsed in on itself from the immense grief he felt.

Thus, that which he held away flowed to the remaining Gods. Prayers... the darkest, most vile prayers that lay within the hearts of all Man. As the horror-wishes flooded the Gods as one, their feelings of dismay and shock at what they had done gave way... to more sinister things. Thus, the Gods became mad, and the world trembled beneath their twisted laughter.

The Broken Sky

It has been five hundred years, to the day, since The Breaking of the Sky occured. Man has struggled to recover, and has made some progress. The Gods remain as they were; crazed and, now, battling for followers and terrain like children fighting over toys. Deep within themselves, however, a tiny glimmer of their past selves remains, wishing for some way to end their self-inflicted misery. This small remnant of sanity has influenced their larger, more broken selves to create the Worthy, mortal men chosen to bear a sliver of their might. Deep down, the Gods pray that these men find a way to bring their madness to an end... but on the outside, they are as much toys as the rest of the world is.

These toys, however, tend to fight back.
