I hope that this missive finds you well and in good health.

Word of the misfortune that befell you reached me, alas, too late; when I arrived in Cherak I found only the sodden coals left in the wake of your departure. When confronted by Wisel on my return to the estate I reported what I had found - this caused her no small discomfort.

My wife, Eketha, has presented me with another daughter, your newest niece. We have named her Venia, despite strong opposition from certain quarters.

As I am sure you already know; the Empress has vanished again. This isn't the first time and I doubt it will be the last, but doing so during Hell's Calibration has set many tongues wagging. Already there is an air reminiscent of naughty children waiting for their parents to return in certain places, but I don't doubt that she will put an end to that on her return.

I have asked quietly about the matter of marks that arose during our last meeting. Unfortunately, almost all the leads I was able to turn up were dead, literally so in some cases. Your earlier supposition does appear to have been correct, which is a worrying turn of events, when placed in the context of previous information. Rest assured that I shall continue to make discreet enquiries, or at least as discreet as I can be.
