Artifact Charms

Stitch In Time Method</b>

Prerequisites: None

The character learns that repair and maintenance are more important than many people realize, and become skilled at maintaining and fixing objects and artifacts. Add the character's Artifact rating to any die roll to repair or maintain any object, mundane or artifact, provided that it is still functional.

Skilled Artisan's Understanding</b>

A true artisan cares not for the differences between materials, nor does he worry about mistakes in his plans. This Charm may be activated whenever the character is making a design, be it for an artifact, creating a spell, or even drawing up battle plans. The character adds a number of automatic successes to the plan equal to her Essence.

Logical Study Technique</b>

With a moment’s reflection, the character realizes underlying meaning. The character must simply look an an object, either magical or mundane, and activate this Charm. She will immediately understand the purpose and function of the device. If it is damaged, she will understand what it is meant to do, but not how to repair it. This Charm adds three automatic successes to rolls to reproduce an Artifact from a copy, and one success to rolls to work any machinery, in addition to its non-mechanical effects.

The character stretches her pattern, granting her a natural ability to attune to artifacts. Each time that this Charm is purchased, the character may choose one of the Five Magical Materials. The character may harmonize fully with that Magical Material at no extra cost. The character may not purchase this Charm more times than they have dots of Essence.

Masterful Artificer Ways</b>

The character becomes a skilled artificer, able to construct artifacts with incredible skill. This Charm may only be used when building either with adamant or with a Magical Material that the character has (Material) Attunement Method for. Each 2 motes spent reduces the difficulty of constructing an artifact by 1, after all other difficulty modifiers are applied. The character may not reduce the difficulty of the roll below 1, nor may she use this Charm when building an Artifact whose rating is above her Essence score.


Sevenfold Tool Technique</b>

To a true master of craftsmanship, time is a fleeting concern. The characters spends a full day working alone in a workshop. The character completes seven days’ worth of work in that time. If combined with other effects that allow the character to finish working faster, this Charm is considered to add six days’ work, and does not stack with those other abilities.

Attunement-Reinforcement Technique</b>

Artifacts can be a source of great power for the Exalted, but they are fundamentally vunerable. Through this Charm, the character learns to offset these vunerabilities.
This Charm has three effects. First, the character can maintain attunement on artifacts that are not in his immediate possession. This requires the reflexive commitment of 1 mote of Essence per day that the character is not in the presence of the artifacts. The commitment ends when the character chooses to de-attune, or when the character next touches the artifact. Secondly, whenever an artifact owned by the character is forcibly de-attuned by any effect, the character may immediately spend half the attunement cost of the artifact (rounding down) to remain attuned. Finally, if an artifact owned by the character is damaged or broken, the character may immediately pay the attunement cost of the artifact to prevent this damage or destruction. This is a perfect effect that does not count as the character’s Charm use for the turn.

Pieces Removed From Play Technique</b>

Prerequisites: Attunement-Reinforcement Technique

With a single, surgical strike, the character attempts to shatter the attunement on an artifact, briefly transforming it into an inert lump of Magical Material. The character targets a specific artifact and makes an attack roll, as normal. If the target is a weapon, it cannot be used to parry the attack, and if it is a shield or similar defensive item, it may not be used to defend against the attack; otherwise, it can be defended against normally. It may be defended against by an applicability-trumping perfect defense such as Heavenly Guardian Technique regardless. If the character succeeds, the artifact is considered de-attuned and useless; it will re-attune automatically at the end of the scene. The artifact’s weight does not alter from its normal attuned nature. Weapons affected by this Charm have the stats of a mundane weapon of their variety; armor halves its soak, rounding down, and any artifacts that would have an effect as a mundane object still have that effect. This Charm may be comboed freely with Charms of other Backgrounds or with Martial Arts.

Attunement Control Method</b>

To the expert Journeyman, there is no artifact that cannot be controlled. When this Charm is activated, the character targets a single artifact that she can see. If the artifact is already attuned, the character must roll Artifact + Essence with a difficulty of the Essence of the person attuned to the artifact. If the roll succeeds, the artifact ceases to be attuned to that person and becomes attuned to the character.
