Appearance:
Amalthea is a beautiful fair skinned woman, with eyes as blue as a clear ocean her long black hair always looks as though she has recently emerged from water. From her waist upwards she seems every bit the dream wife for a young dynast with curves that captured the hearts of sailors and made them forget mortal danger. From the waist downward however are iridescent blue scales and her legs form together into a single strong fish tail that is surprisingly dextrous even upon land that allows her to move upright (albeit slowly) unassisted. Not that there’s ever been a shortage of volunteers.
Background:
Origins:
When the Water Aspected Sorceress Cynis Dyna visited the western island of Innsmouth to investigate ancient ruins she encountered a great sea monster that thrust itself upon her.
Three days later Dyna awoke upon the beach, her clothes torn to rags and a curious stirring in her womb. Undaunted she continued her investigation to learn all she could from the ruins before they were swallowed by the tides.
It was not until she finished her incursion that Dyna’s suspicions were confirmed; she was indeed pregnant with the child of whatever that monster was. She contemplated taking an overdose of maiden tea to kill the blasphemous offspring but for reasons she still doesn’t understand she didn’t.
Sure enough her pregnancy ran its course, though in labour she held her daiklave nearby… just in case. To her surprise and delight she had bore a healthy and beautiful baby girl with what appeared to be a fish tail. Naturally this would lead to jokes about Cynis inbreeding but Dyna named her daughter Amalthea after her own mother who had warned her about couplings with strange fish creatures.
Early Life:
Amalthea would prove herself more than a freak of nature, surprising her immediate family by taking the second breath. Dyna was quick to use her daughter’s talents and attempted to home-school her (unsurprisingly having a fish tail leads to bullying) in treasure hunting in both the Inland Sea and the Western Ocean.
The young Dragon-Blooded got very lonely out at sea and periodically perched upon a rocky outcrop to sing to passing ships. Regrettably this caused many needless deaths and Amalthea soon stopped.
It was then that she was approached by a Sea Witch who served the Neverborn “Whose Whispers Chain” she wanted the little Dragon-Blooded’s voice to use for her artefact but the little Dragon-Blooded declined saying that her voice was all she had.
Thus the sea witch chased Amalthea all across the western ocean, until she washed ashore on the Blessed Isle.
Dyna found her daughter lying upon the beach surrounded by many gawking patricians who initially believed her to be a sea spirit, when they realised she was Dragon-Blooded they were shocked. Though upon learning she was House Cynis they were much less shocked and helped her home.
New Beginnings:
Despite her mother’s urgings Amalthea refused to return to the ocean out of fear that the sea witch would steal her voice. Dyna tried to convince her that this was nonsense but Amalthea was having none of this. Eventually mother and daughter came to conflict over just what use a fish tailed woman would be if she didn’t use her gift.
She wasn’t going to be much use as a courtesan; even most Dragon-Blooded men found coupling with a woman with the hindquarters of a fish rather off-putting. A few of the more decadent Cynis suggested she’d be more successful had her forequarters been that of a fish. Dyna having now heard every fish joke conceivable responded to these men with sudden sharp blows to the head.
One day while trying to stop her mother from killing a magistrate who made an unintentional comment about something being “fishy” that she burst into song, causing many of the house hold staff to start singing and dancing alongside her and Amalthea’s singing talent was finally realised by her family.
More recently:
While travelling the Blessed Isle Amalthea became extremely lonely, she watched the happy couples that came to watch her with a tear in her eye. There was nobody in the all the world that as like her, her mother had told her that was a good thing even as she strangled an unfortunate fishmonger. It was with a heavy heart that the young Dragon-Blooded left the Blessed Isle to find herself and just possibly her prince.
