Anvil from the Smokeless Forge
Level: Five
Commitment: 10 or 30 motes (Jade)
- Created by Aluszaro Masziasz, a Twilight craftsman, legendary for both his ability and his volatile nature, it a master work of mythical proportions.
- This Artifact is made up of thirty-six pieces of jade. Eighteen pieces of red jade, nine pieces of black jade, and nine pieces of white jade. All thirty-six pieces are equal in mass, but are of a unique and different shape. Each piece of red and black jade weighs 157 pounds, while each of the nine white jade pieces is 193 pounds. The thirty-six pieces of jade are scattered all throughout Creation, and the Anvil has not been whole since the days just before the Great Contagion. However, there is hope for those seeking the Anvil. Each piece can lead an individual to the next nearest piece. A candle placed upon a red jade piece will find its flame flickering in the direction of its nearest mate. Water dripped on a piece of black jade will flow towards another piece of the Anvil, and dirt or stones placed on a white jade piece will do the same. These thirty-six pieces of jade fit together in a specific order to form an anvil which is more than four times the size of a standard anvil. Once fully formed, the Anvil becomes twice as heavy as it's individual pieces and is therefore practically immovable. For some unknown reason, the Anvil has a single hearthstone setting.
- Assembling the Anvil requires either an Intelligence and Lore or Intelligence and Crafts roll, at a difficulty of 3. This can be completed as an extended action; but it takes one day per roll.
- The Anvil requires ten motes of Essence be committed to it in order to activate even its most common features. Another twenty motes are required for its full benefit. As always, the number of necessary motes for attunement is doubled for Exalts other than Dragon-Blooded.
- By committing ten motes of Essence, the red jade within the Anvil heats up, allowing any blacksmith to use it like a normal anvil. The red jade reabsorbs most of the heat it creates, and does not produce any smoke, keeping the smithy quite cool. The blacksmith working on it will gain one additional die to his Craft (Metalsmithing) roll, which is due to the nearly perfect working conditions the Anvil offers, this benefit can be gained even my a mortal, as long as Anvil is infused with Essence. In this state, the Anvil is nothing more than a First Age curiosity, practically useless when compared to its true abilities.
- Committing an additional twenty motes of Essence, will activate the black and white jade within the Anvil, and enable an Exalted Blacksmith to work with the Anvil directly. The Anvil's surface, while still hot enough to melt nearly any substance, no longer burns the Exalted attuned to it. Any substance melted by the Anvil is similarly safe, allowing the Exalted to use her bare hands to work the material. The red jade begins responding faithfully to the silent commands of the Exalted, heating up or cooling down as necessary, never moving more than a degree away from the perfect temperature. The white jade within the Anvil fortifies the metal or other substances being worked, ensuring that it stays strong and durable, without forming any weaknesses or stresses from being worked incorrectly. The black jade sections within the Anvil are able to perfectly quench the material being worked with, with better results than anyone can achieve with water or oil. In addition, the black jade subtly adjusts the flow of the material being worked when it is in a fluid state, assisting in thousands of tiny, imperceptible ways.
- The Anvil, when fully attuned, the Exalted gains numerous benefits. The Exalted committed to the Anvil gains ten additional dice to his Craft (Metalsmithing) roll, and completes any project in half its normal time.
- Further, the Exalted metalsmith can treat all metals she works with, regardless of their quality, as though they were the finest in the world when determining the difficulty for creating objects, making it an easy task to create perfect blades.
- Any form of stone, gem, or other hard object that is "of the Earth element" can be worked with just as though it were metal of good quality. Any of these substances will easily melt when heated, rather than cracking or shattering.
- Finally, the Exalted using the Anvil can work without rest, sleep, food or water for one week per dot of Crafts they possess, allowing one to churn out a Legion’s worth of arms and armor within the span of a couple of months.
