Jigen Style

By Loremaster

Background

These Charms were made for a very powerful Sidereal tree, so that I didn't need to give 80 charms to my First Age Sidereal protagonists to make them worthwhile. This charm tree is too powerful for PCs.

Charms

Read the Moves

Cost: 5 motes
Duration: Instant
Type: Supplemental
Min. Martial Arts: 3
Min. Essence: 2
Prereqs: None

The character assesses his foe’s behaviour and reacts accordingly. On any attempt to dodge or parry an attack, a player may declare that his character is using Read the Moves. The player then rolls his Martial Arts and counts successes. For every success he has, the target number he has to roll on a die to get a success on the dodge or parry is lowered by one. This can be used in combo with dodge charms. If the character parries, he must do so using Martial Arts.

This Charm must be declared before the attack dice are rolled.

Jigen Anticipation Technique

Cost: 5 motes, 1 willpower
Duration: One scene
Type: Simple
Min. Martial Arts: 3
Min. Essence: 3
Prereqs: Read the Moves

The character must meditate for one full turn by concentrating on the environment to activate this Charm. For the remainder of the scene, the Martial Artist will be able to guess at what everyone intends to do in a battle. This means that every player must declare their actions before the Sidereal does. In addition to this, anyone trying to surprise him must so with supernatural powers such as a Easily Overlooked Presence, and then must win at a contested roll (Dex +Stealth against Per + Investigation) to do so.

Jigen Style

Cost: 5 motes, 1 willpower
Duration: One scene
Type: Simple
Min. Martial Arts: 4
Min. Essence: 4
Prereqs: Jigen Anticipation Technique

The character starts walking around with apparent clumsiness, and often looks like he’s making mistakes and leaving openings. All these openings are just traps for the unwary to fall in. Anyone attempting to hit the Martial Artist becomes unable to exploit any true weakness on his part, and is often confused by the technique. For that reason, anyone attempting to strike at the Martial Artist must roll 9 or above to score successes.

Jigen Defense Penetration

Cost: 2 motes per die
Duration: One turn
Type: Extra Action
Min. Martial Arts: 5
Min. Essence: 5
Prereqs: Jigen Style

The character feints in a way that forces the foe to defend a certain way, and then attack as normal. For every mote of Essence he spent, limited by his (Dexterity + Martial Arts) total, the Martial Artist removes one die to any defence used by foes against all of his attacks that turn.

Jigen Iaijutsu

Cost: 4 motes
Duration: Instant
Type: Simple
Min. Martial Arts: 5
Min. Essence: 4
Prereqs: Jigen Style

The character must have his weapon sheathed to use this attack. The character draws his sword or weapon at an incredible speed and attack the target in the same movement. The attack is so fast it cannot be parried except by someone using Jigen Anticipation Technique, Surprise Anticipation Method, or the like.

In addition to this, the Jigen Iaijutsu is ideal for a surprise attack, justifying the claim that “A true friend stabs you in the front”. Someone caught in a surprise attack can rarely defend himself.

Weapon of the Chosen

Cost: 15 motes
Duration: One scene
Type: Simple
Min. Martial Arts: 4
Min. Essence: 4
Prereqs: Jigen Style

The character takes one full turn to unite with his weapon more thoroughly. As he does so, he commits the 15 motes of Essence necessary for this Charm. For the remainder of the scene, the Martial Artist’s weapon (whether it be a fist or a true weapon) is filled with Essence. Both the Speed, Accuracy and Defence ratings of the weapon are increased by a number of points equal to the character’s Essence. 5 additional motes can be spent to increase the damage of the weapon by the same amount.

In addition to this, all attacks and parries made with this weapon are considered Charm-enhanced. This bypasses many Dragon-Blooded defences.

If the Exalted loses contact with his weapon at any time, the Charm will be immediately cancelled.
