Background
You were born a half-breed son of House Ledaal, one of the great noble houses of the Realm. When you did not exalt as one of the Dragon-Blooded, you found a new calling in the legions. Life was good, and if your orders occasionally gave you pause, you did not question them openly.
Your final deployment was to the southeast, where festering unrest in one of the Realm’s client states had turned into open rebellion. You still remember the last mission your company was sent on: to destroy a village suspected of harbouring rebels. Having been harried for days, you and your fellow soldiers were in no mood to show mercy to the villagers. Most of them were no match for you, except for one man. He alone stood his ground, wielding a glittering sword crafted of a material you had never seen before, and cut down your comrades by the dozen. Finally he was overwhelmed by sheer weight of numbers, and you personally struck the killing blow, while he lay pinned and helpless under a press of bodies.
You remember this, and more, because it was then that you exalted as a Solar. You knew in a flash that the cause for which you fought was wrong, and the empire you served had been built on lies. Overwhelmed by the enormity of your actions, you tried to run from the battlefield, but the other surviving soldiers stopped you. When you tried to explain what had happened, they called you mad, and a traitor, and attacked, forcing you to kill them.
Now, five years later, you wander the Threshold as a warrior for hire. You work as a mercenary, a guard, and a teacher of swordsmanship. You have scruples; you will not work for someone whose cause you do not support, and you will not kill without need. You also want nothing to do with the Realm, even as you know that they want you dead.
