Book I: Mechanisms of Worldly Function
At the outset, it should be clear: playing a game of Exalted carries with it a great many assumptions. Playing a game in the Avatar universe should likewise carry with it a great many assumptions about how the world works--many in direct conflict with the assumptions of Exalted. This page will outline major changes to the base mechanics necessary to accomodate the assumptions of the Avatar universe.
Attributes
Changes to Attributes, if necessary, would go here.
Abilities
- Craft - The Craft skill is undifferentiated, representing a general aptitude for making things. There is no limit on the number of Specialties a character may have for Craft, but he may never apply more than a +3 dice bonus to any one roll. Most NPCs should be represented by one or two "real" dots of Craft, and then Specialties.
- Occult - The Occult skill is largely unchanged, but it may be important to note that it reflects the Avatar universe's spirit lore, including the correct way to deal with spirits and the nature of the spirit world at large.
- Linguistics - This seems to be a problem...as far as I know, there aren't any real languages per se in the Avatar universe. While it still controls written social attacks and the like, I'm not sure it still deserves it's own slot.
Advantages
- Essence - Essence is renamed Chi, because the series uses that term to describe the vague, vital energy that empowers benders and nonbenders alike. Your rating is Permanent Chi, motes are still simply motes of Chi. There is no division of Pools; if you have a Chi rating of 2+, you simply have a pool of Chi. Updated formulas can be found in Character Creation. This adaptation of the Avatar setting assumes a drastically different spread of Chi ratings when compared to the relative propogation of Essence 1 mortals in Creation.
- Roughly 40% of all people have Chi 1. Examples: background peasants, the Cabbage Merchant, Foaming Mouth Guy.
- All benders and a great many warriors or artisans (25% of the population) have Chi ratings of 2. Examples: Young benders, the Herbalist, Earth nation conscripts, most of Jet's rebels.
- Professional soldiers, spiritual leaders, and masters of their craft often enjoy Chi ratings from 3 to 4. Examples: Fire Nation soldiers, the Engineer, the Boulder, Ty Lee.
- Only those who could be called true masters reach Chi 5. Examples: Katara, Toph, Sokka, and Zuko by the end of the series.
- Legendary figures of incomparable mastery reach Chi 6. Examples: the masters of the White Lotus, Guru Pathik, Fire Lord Ozai.
- The only mortal capable of reaching Chi 7 is a fully-realized Avatar, and even then only when channeling the Avatar Spirit.
