Character Description

Glass Mandala is insane. This cannot really be disputed. It is, however, a somewhat functional madness. A scholar prior to visiting the town of Jade-upon-the-River in An-Teng, he became fascinated by the thaumaturgic rituals detailed in the town's ancient libraries. The town was, however, the home of a guardian Fae, Damon Sun-Touched, bound by an ancient oath to a Solar. She allowed him use of the library, and for safe practice of magic, her Freehold - but did not warn him that he was in danger there, unlike the many Fae-blooded residents of the town. He was lucky, perhaps - his body remained mostly the same, only his eyes and reproductive organs being mutated. His mind, however, was not so safe - the Wyld twisted it, increasing his considerable intelligence and supplying it with talent - but forever tainting his magic. He has followed a friend, the Fae-blood Wakened Mirror, to the River Province and Grayfalls in his Wyld-born mad quest to find the patterns and order of the Wyld.

Expanded Backgrounds, Merits and Flaws

  • Knowledge - Glass Mandala has studied the skills and rituals of thaumaturgy in the ancient library of the town Jade-upon-the-River, although he understood none of the texts on Sorcery. He was helped in his endeavors by the mad bound Fae Damon, who let him practice in her Freehold beneath the Manse in the town.
  • Experience - Glass Mandala, while he studied, picked up a modicum of practical experience helping with odd jobs around the town of Jade-upon-the-River.
  • Library - While Glass Mandala could not read Old Realm, he stole as many books as he could carry and understand from the libraries of Jade-upon-the-River. This was surprisingly many.
  • Resources - Glass Mandala is good at budgeting, and earns a decent living by mooching off his friend, Wakened Mirror, and selling his alchemic and craft-based services to the locals of Greyfalls.
  • Contacts - Glass Mandala maintains contact with various scholars and the people of Jade-upon-the-River, which allows him to learn various things. His scholarly contacts are largely others who have studied the Wyld, but not entirely.
  • Essence Awareness - Glass Mandala learned how to unbind the first chains on his soul via the books in Jade-upon-the-River, becoming aware of Essence and its power, but not unlocking his full potential at it.
  • Essence Mastery - However, by practice, and by having his power expanded by Wyld-Taint from the Freehold, Glass Mandala soon learned to unbind his Essence and use it in full.
  • Essence Recovery - not so much a learned skill as one shoved into his soul, the Wyld influx and Mandala's own staying around the Essence-rich Freehold caused his own Essence to regenerate far faster than normal.
  • The Flow of Essence - Learning to control his social skills and pump power into them, Glass Mandala studied the books of his stolen library, piecing together scattered bits of knowledge, and slowly gained the ability to power his Social Attributes with Essence.
  • Driving Passion - Glass Mandala's passion - or obsession - is to discover the secrets of the Wyld. He is especially interested in learning to create Wyld zones, control them and even understand any underlying pattern that may exist.
  • Dark Magics - Glass Mandala is not aware of this fact, but his magics are tainted by the Wyld, registering as alien and evil to any detectors of such. when he performs magic, there is often a strange touch of chaos in the aesthetic nature of his rituals.
  • Disturbing - Mandala is not comfortable to be around, as his obsession is easily visible in his actions - he stares too much into space, or his eyes rove, searching for something in the air, or he pauses in his speech for ideas, or goes off on tangents.
  • Unusual Appearance - From the taint of the Wyld, Glass Mandala's eyes have been changed - half of each iris is the brown that it originally was, but the other half is bright, emerald green.
  • Sterile - Glass Mandala's bow, as they say, is not even strung. This is because the Wyld changed how his body works, and his reproductive system is vestigial, at best, now.
