mmkay, so the DotFA rules for elder exalt chargen aren't good. I might try again with:
I use the following template for creating high Essence characters.
Each dot of Essence includes: 1 Free Attribute Dot (2 if you are a splat that favors Attributes, but one has to be in a Favored Attribute) 3 Free Ability dots (5 if you Favor Abilities, but two have to be in Favored Abilities) 3 free background dots (BG over 3 cost 1 per 1) X Free Charms (where X is the number of starting Charms the splat gets, so Solars get 10 Charms five of which must be favored, Alchemicals would get 4 General and 4 Dedicated Charm Slots with one charm to fill each and so on) 15 Bonus Points
You create the character in stages. So if you want to make an Essence 6+ alchemical you build a starting character, then add the above template 4 times. (Aaron Peory's house rule)
