Background and Other Such Fluff

Ledaal Lazar is one of the younger sons of House Ledaal, the son of the historian and bureaucrat Ledaal Pomera and her husband, Cathak Garal Javon. He has only recently come into his own, both as a capable young sorcerer and as something other than a long-standing thorn in his family's side.

Unlike so many Dynastic "problem children," Lazar's status as a liability did not arise from either his temperament or his competence. Even from a very young age, it was obvious to his parents that Lazar would be bright, and he has always possessed a quiet, pliable temperament. No, the problem with Lazar in his parents' eyes is that, in a time when House Ledaal is focused on making good political marriages for its children, Lazar is and always has been quite ugly -- reed-thin and pale, with unmanageable straw-pale hair, a long nose, and a long, equine-looking face. Children of a quiet, sorcerous temperament have always been difficult to successfully marry off, but an ungainly and ugly sorcerer was a certain liability to his family.

Lazar has always known subconsciously that he wasn't quite what his family wanted, and he's worked hard to make himself useful. As a child, he pushed himself to read and absorb the Ledaal family's significant volumes of lore and ancient writings, as well as practicing the "presentable" hobbies of martial arts and horseback riding. (While Lazar proved to have real talent as an equestrian, the nickname "Horse-Face" attached itself to him at some point in primary school, and in some circles it still has yet to entirely depart.) Even in the primary-school atmosphere of prayer and hope, his devotions to the Dragons in hope for Exaltation were particularly devout, with a hint of desperation; his hopes were rewarded when he Exalted as an Air-Aspect at age 11, securing for him some place in the plans of House Ledaal, even if he would never be quite what his parents had hoped for.

Ledaal Lazar entered the Heptagram with high hopes. He was attracted to the study of sorcery in the hopes that that sort of power could prove to be undeniably useful and due to his long-held love of learning; indeed, in time at the Heptagram he managed to excel, making a name for himself as a sorcerer to watch. He graduated from the Heptagram seven years ago with a good body of skills, some connections, and not-inconsiderable potential... and yet, the thorny problem of his marriageability remained hanging in the air. Both Lazar and his parents assumed that, barring any particular offers from other Houses, Lazar would remain a bachelor.

Four years ago, Lazar's mother was traveling in the North when she encountered a young woman, apparently from a northern barbarian tribe, who bore the markings of a Fire-Aspected Dragon-Blooded. She explained that her name was Tsebeta, that she had come into her strange powers quite recently, and that she was fleeing from a terrible fate that awaited her if she returned to her tribe. Tsebeta was a strong young woman, able to serve as a bodyguard in the event of Lazar ending up over his head in intrigue, and she was moderately pretty. Ledaal Pomera realized that she would demand very little of the House, far less than would any more "respectable" marriage; furthermore, if the young outcaste married Lazar, their children would likely be attractive enough to be good matches. Pomera offered asylum and privilege to Tsebeta if she would marry her son, and Tsebeta accepted the offer without hesitation. The two returned to the Blessed Isle, there to begin more formal proceedings.

Lazar and Tsebeta were married three years ago, after Ledaal Pomera had succeeded in integrating her future daughter-in-law into the day-to-day life of a Dynastic family, and the marriage of convenience has become a mutually-agreeable union. Lazar and Tsebeta do not entirely understand each other, but they do enjoy each other's company a great deal, and they are beginning to even fall in love with each other. They have yet to produce any children, but they both realize that they have a great deal of time for child-rearing, and so for now they are content with minor service to the House. Lazar is primarily occupied in magical and occult research and organization of the House's library, and Tsebeta continues to learn the ropes of a proper Dynastic lifestyle.

Lazar is quiet and scholarly by nature, and he's also eager to please his family and those others he holds close. He dislikes the thought of violence and is glad to have Tsebeta by his side, but he highly enjoys the meditative aspects of martial arts and is more than able to defend himself if Tsebeta can't do it alone. While he can follow social circles and the intrigues thereof (he's certainly more of a people person than he looks), he still isn't very confident compared to most Dynasts, and thus he is careful not to get in over his head.
