Nellens Deferens was a quiet but charming sort. Unambitious and unassuming, he was satisfied with his life as an overseer at a plantation. He treated even the lowliest slave with kindness and respect, and his peers often sought him out for his calm wisdom.
Then the great political come and comer of the house, Nellens Terel, visited the plantation for a quiet vacation, and became impressed with Deferens' wisdom, and made the overseer part of his entourage and brought him back to the Imperial City.
There the quiet man spread his charm and wisdom, making many friends, even amongst other houses. He spent much of his free time silently observing the activities of the city and palace.
He grew sad and angry. In his little part of the isle, he had been isolated from the evil and corruption that the Empire had become. Or as he learned, had always been. He lay abed one night, restless and pondering, when he felt the warmth of the Sun upon his face.
"You are a good and righteous man, Nellens Deferens. I need your wisdom to guide what is to happen. And you need to know the truth."
Suddenly his mind was filled with memories from another age. The Solars who ruled. Their corruption. The betrayal by the Dragon Blooded. Views of the further past, of fighting the Primordeals and their demonic servants. Of the rule of light and justice that happened afterwards.
His thoughts lingered on the golden age, and the Sun spoke to him once more.
"I set you the task to guide things secretly and with discretion. Trust in your heart. Truth will be your guide"
With that the heat faded, and Nellens Deferens became an Exalted.
He soon found that his charm had become incredible indeed, and subtly worked against the House that he found most despicable, the debauched Cynis. Soon enough certain secrets were exposed, and former allies were turned foe. Cynis became the lowest House.
As careful as he was, House Cynis managed to find out who was behind their downfall, and now want his head. Nellens Terrel agreed with Deferens that it would be good for him to leave the Isle for a while. And then he surprised him. Terrel revealed that he knew that Deferens was an Anathema, and that he had guided and protected him so far. A bigger surprise was that Terrel wasn’t even really Terrel, but a Gold Faction Sidereal. He told Deferens that it was time for him to meet with other Solars, and gave him directions of how to meet them in the ruined city of Chiaroscuro.
The weak immune system is due to a curse placed by a god of Disease upon him, at the urging of House Cynis Imacculates. The Greater Curse is a part of his heartless past life.
