The Sambi Tribe

The Sambi is a small tribe that exists just west of the Dune People where the desert meets the plains. They follow an elder family and also a shaman. The balance of power is fairly stable between the shaman and the elders, given that not much has changed within the tribe for 15 years or so. However, the shaman is elderly and this has caused some tension regarding the next shaman.

The Sambi are small enough that they tend to coast under the noses of the Immaculate order, which is good, because the shamans of the tribe worship the sun. Not as the Unconquered Sun, but as the light that keeps the Wyld at bay. It is forbidden to cast shadow on the Shaman and rude, near insulting, to cast shadow on anyone else. The Shaman is responsible for negotiation with the sun to let the clouds and rain come and to teach the youth of the tribe about the power of light and the evil of dark. The Wyld and the dark are analogous and going to the Wyld is the right, privilege and occasional duty of shaman alone.

The elder family is differed to on matters of the movement of the tribe and knowledge. Families are monogamous and men and women share decision-making responsibilities, but men hunt and women gather.

The tribe follows herds of grazing animals from water hole to water hole. They often find themselves tracking the other predators to find the prey they seek and competing with them. Because it is their main source of food and much of their clothes and equipment, they guard the herd from other tribes with great zeal.
